What I learned surviving the pandemic

- Slashing my spending on restaurants and takeout. I am a pretty decent cook after all. - Making my own bread every week instead of buying it - Severing ties with frenemy. Life is too short for “friends” taking swipes at you. - Donating goods and food to local pantry is the right thing to do because I have more than enough. - Your place of employment honestly does not care about you one iota. - Your hobbies are your life. - Brand names and people who wear/drive conspicuous logos are all about trying to manipulate you. - When people can’t travel and are forced to remain still and local, and get depressed, it says a lot about them. - We have survived a global pandemic.

You sound like you're achieving enlightenment. Good for you. Naomi Klein wrote a good book called No Logo and a couple of other good books. They're at the library.

We learnt nothing

This was a pandemic lite so most people in Canada were not hit hard unless your idea of suffering is not being able to eat at Boston Pizza. The next one might have a 30% mortality rate and let’s see how well everything holds up. No food in the stores, no electricity or running water might make all the things you learnt irrelevant. You would be better off learning to fish, hunt and plant a vegetable garden.

- that buried mental issues will sprout wildly amidst the loneliest season of life
- that you must seek help for recurring themes and so i have gone to an ultrasound, now a sleep apnea test on monday, and eventually mental health resources when i work myself up to it
- you will drive yourself insane living alone and choosing to spend much time alone and it's important to have others who care deeply about you to stay grounded in your life but when you have no one to confide in presently in the city you have to... i, i am figuring this one out
- you will question everything you have partaken in (again) and wonder what you should do with your life now that nothing truly matters
- care more, care less, you know?

I know far too many people that struggle with adult conversations, because they're too self-involved and have no interests outside of themselves, so when they are confronted with an engaged person they become resentful and take cheap shots at anyone making an effort. No one likes to be reminded they're airheads. That's life in a city with so many self-involved people.

One more thing

The quiet spaces (lockdown, with not much in the news cycle) means that people became aware of George Floyd’s death - it might not have made the news pre-pandemic. And all of these quiet spaces have meant time for self-reflection, an awakening to issues surrounding racism, and time to think about change. Pre-pandemic, would the news about the bodies on the grounds of the Kamloops Residential school have had as much impact? I think not - people would have been more focused on travel, going to concerts, hanging out with friends, and people may not have been paying attention.

So I am very grateful for that. Hopefully we will all come out of this as more enlightened, aware and open, and willing to make real change.

I completely agree with the 2nd anonymous. The greatest lesson I learned was that some people can only "survive" by holding others down. Living alone during a pandemic was apparently an invitation for toxic people who never understood social distancing rules, or any basic principles/values for that matter, to try to wreak more havoc on vulnerable folks around them because they were desperate to get laid. Some people are really that shallow and showed no growth before/during the pandemic. Do not let them in. Showing more kindness and love is not always the answer. Do not sink to their level. Keep focusing your compassion and kindness on services/folks who need it.
