I end up in psychiatric care

I am in medical leave because of my career. I work in social services. The amount of pressure, abuse, lack of support, lack of promoting mental wellness, and the broken system in this field that I end up having a mental breakdown. Unfortunately, I have to quit this field. No amount of self-care and trying to detach myself as a frontline worker couldn't avoid my fate. Yes, another one bite the dust in the helping field. :-(

That sucks OP

I get it. The “self-care” narrative has been distorted and weaponized by employers who wish to avoid accountability for all the ways they create and sustain conditions that lead to burnout.

It’s not your fault for having a breakdown while under the reign of a broken system. Time to walk away from this bullshit for good.

This is commonplace.

Good, hardworking people trying to make a difference with no supports, low workplace morale, and they burn out in as little as a year. And there is such a huge need for people to help troubled kids, the mentally ill, the elderly, the isolated and forgotten. It's a damn shame.

My view...

... is that the environment in the education system means that those who don't enjoy a coddling environment will drop out. This means our professional classes will be composed of people who need a "safe space."

Do we want psychopaths as professionals? No, but we also don't want people who cannot deal with suffering and go "well, that sucks, but, you know, at least it's not me."

Since some time last century, we have been undergoing a MASSIVE social experiment in censorship and changing who is considered "fit" to have an academic degree, or a professional employment.

What do you want, a professional who can only function in a "safe space" (real life isn't a University Campus) or a professional who can deal with a bit of "unsafety"?

Good luck!

Have one of the highest suicide rates. How the hell can these Fraudian Nurse Ratsh*ts help anyone if they don't first help themselves? Suggest you give them, and anyone selling 'medicine' the sniff test before getting anywhere near them BECAUSE something don't smell right !

Sigh

So sorry to hear this - stress, and then add vicarious trauma on top: carrying someone else’s difficult experiences, feeling responsible to fix everything and that you’re a failure if you can’t- nobody talks about it, but it can be pretty devastating (have it in my profession, too). I hope you find a new career that fills your spirit and brings you joy. All the best.

I was there

I left social work for a better opportunity after a year of crying almost every night. It’s difficult to maintain compassion for people who hurt their children and others, hide behind endless excuses and anger that’s probably justifiable (how fun would it be to be an abused kid with FAS yourself?), and make the same mistakes over and over, while saying that it’s your fault since you are the face of the government?

Anyone who can do this is desperate, a burnout, or a saint.

I was not a saint and I regret it but I do wonder if the public in general realizes how it is to deal with severely damaged and damaging people. For me it’s just crisis management and I have little hope for them. Their kids though…sometimes they pull through so we keep trying

The OP, a frontline worker, had a breakdown from abuse and lack of support and your response is to abuse them more? Good god man what do you do, if you work that is? Please don't say it requires empathy.

I can totally relate except that I work in health care. Oh the irony.
