Only kids for rich celebrities

I cannot help but feel that Canada is falling apart. Only rich people can afford to have kids. Nobody else can afford a house or the necessities to create a stable environment for them. What a terrible mess... and everyone is politically fighting each other instead of working against the causes of it. The government and corporations hate us.

I feel the same way

I live in Kamloops. I work at an engineering firm and have what would be considered an upper middle class job (20 to 30 years ago). I have tens of thousands of student loans still ( in my early 30's) and watching home prices jump 30% this year made the idea of having a family, with a dog and home before this.. a difficult one, to one that is now impossible.
This country is falling apart and we Canadians are apathetic to putting up with this increasing rent, job wage stagnation. It is starting to deeply bother me because what am I working for?

You make it sound like having kids is a necessity instead of a privelage; but in reality, if the world's population doesn't decrease drastically, we are all screwed.

Low income isn't a barrier to having children. In fact it almost guarantees it. As the middle class dissolves the only people not breeding are the educated penny-pinchers. And our corporate overlords don't want or need the educated poor anyway.

Get a puppy. They don't grow up to spend their time gossiping, backstabbing, turning people against one another, and forming coalitions to ostracize someone, and the added bonus is, their carbon footprint is tiny in comparison. Think of your carbon legacy.

Hate to be a bummer but...

The rich will have to learn to use a crossbow like the rest of us, when civilization collapses due to climate change. Physicists, Mauro Bologna and Gerardo Aquino give us a 10 percent chance to survive, the next 100 to 200 years, which they described as the most "optimistic scenario." Now that's an ahem... reset!! I love how the business community is throwing the words post Covid reset around, funny.

Being successful and having money isn’t a closed club. Anyone can join.

I’m from a 1 parent home, suffered abuse and had to leave home at 16, before even finishing high school. I went from being homeless, to couch surfing, to renting a room, to having a small shared apartment. I managed to work horrible jobs and go back to school, without any help. Every year I got a little further ahead. Now I’m 50, retired, have my dream house with no mortgage and the company I started provides income for a bunch of families. I know what it’s like to have no food and no place to sleep. That drove me to continually improve my life.

It doesn’t matter where you start. Anyone can be successful if they are driven to be. Those that aren’t driven to be successful? Why should they be rewarded the same as those that are driven are? This is Canada. Anyone can succeed. In virtually every community there are highly successful people of every race, religion, gender and ability.

If you are unhappy with your situation, take the lead in changing it. Very few people find success by having it break in their front door and drag them off the sofa. Anyone can join the club, it just takes effort and a desire to succeed.

Honestly

Rich celebrities these days are having kids out of wedlock. What's so special or enlightening about that?

Cool tough life story bro. You failed to include the part where you could buy a home for 250 k in the time you grew , and those homes now cost in the millions in vancouver. This past year with covid the average home price across canada went up 30% or $120,000+.
That is ops point , it is absolutely becoming a closed a club and ever increasingly difficult. When assets rise in price and wages do not keep up it costs more money to acquire the same assets making it more difficult to get ahead

I think you’re neglecting to notice that times now aren’t at all like they once were. I’m much older than you are, and I remember that getting a decent job in Vancouver wasn’t nearly as difficult then as it is now. You could get hired almost anywhere without any degrees, you could start at the bottom and work your way up with, often, not even a high school education. Home ownership wasn’t as out of reach then as it is now. Prices have far exceeded the reach of anyone who doesn’t have a very high income (and Vancouver is notoriously behind the times in terms of average salaries), post-secondary education was possible with very generous student loans and bursaries, many of which were never paid off because the debts were forgiven. Unless you were lucky enough to have bought a home before the early 2000’s, or unless you’re lucky enough to have inherited money, it’s going to be much, much harder to enjoy what we always thought of as a middle class lifestyle. You’re out of touch my friend, and unfortunately your smug attitude is typical of those people who continue to assume that the only reason someone hasn’t achieved homeownership or career success is because they just aren’t trying hard enough. It might be time to check your privilege.
