... I feel about academia, or Canadian Universities. If people only knew, or cared. I was legit advised by one prof that I should go to school in another country because of how bad things are here for my field.

Is it possible for you to (anonymously) elaborate on that? How would things improve for you by leaving Canada? Just curious.

It's the censorship issue. You might have heard of Lindsay Shepherd. I was treated far worse than she was, because I didn't make any audio recordings.

It doesn't happen all that often, but when it does happen, they more or less try to ruin you. You have to stay "on script" or you get nowhere.

It's the same for all institutions, but in Canada, especially BC, it's sort of treated as a "good thing."

I had a friend who was doing independent journalism in BC during Occupy Vancouver. He fled the Province once some of the hangers-on at Occupy Vancouver started trying to have him interned as a psychiatric patient.

In a workplace, they just would have complained that he was "harassing" them and had him fired. It's the same at UBC, etc.

Another similar story, from a friend of the family whose son is about a decade younger than me, he was doing undergrad in ~2018 or so.

He whistles, and he was called into the Dean's office because some woman complained he was "harassing" her by whistling. These things are taken very seriously, you know. Nothing came of it, but he now has a mark on his record there, so if someone else complains it is a "pattern."

This friend of the family, her husband is a very successful Queen's Counsel. She suggested that they should have some legal recourse, and his take was "yeah, it's wrong, but you can't sue them, it's not worth the money."

Ujjal Dosanj burned (or would have but for the municipal law) his degree recently---UBC is not a "safe space" unless you are the "go along to get along" type, and that's, like, not a University. But they gotta sell those degrees to pay the admin staff...I think they know where the bodies are buried or something.

Slightly opposite. I love the people I work with & where I work, the job on the other hand, meh. It was great for me 20 years ago, but it no longer fits my beliefs today. I've been in toxic workplaces before though, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Good luck if you're looking, I hope you're able to find a better place.

would be great if you didn’t have to deal with the people and the corporate stuff. Seems like so much time is wasted talking about working when you could be just working. Life is ridiculous. I’m surprised more people aren’t crazy.
