Weird nightmare

I have the strangest re-occurring nightmare. Its the first day of school and I have all my books and im ready to go, but I dont know where my specific classes are. Its always in this enormous labyrinthine university setting with winding halls and many many floors that seem to go on forever. Everyone else is milling around seemingly comfortable and happy and there I am clutching my books and freaking the f*** out totally lost and confused. I become overwhelmed by this powerless and humiliating feeling... its dreadful.

Not Strange

Sounds like a typical anxiety dream re: struggling with self-confidence in big, new overwhelming situations.

Over the last 20 years I've had the same dream/nightmare over and over. I rarely dream about anything else. It always takes place at school. Basically, I show up to class and find out that a big assignment was due that day and I completely forgot about it. I feel this terrible panic and dread. Sometimes the nightmare alternates a little and I find out that there is a big exam that day that I completely forgot about and didn't study for so I'm completely unprepared. Again, I get that same feeling of panic and dread in my chest before I wake up.

The dream may point to a lack of self confidence. On some level you are aware you have all the resources you need to forge ahead, but on a deeper level there might be a feeling of "imposter syndrome"?

I also feel a bit of lonliness and a feeling of not quite having found your crowd? Maybe you're in the wrong school (literally or metaphorically) or you don't quite vibe with the situation you find yourself in right now, but there's an element of doing it because everyone else is, or you "should"?

I would take time to explore where you feel powerless and humiliated in your waking life? If you are unable to locate that, maybe take a look at the "shoulds" in your life, and what you fear as worst case scenario if you stopped doing/entertaining those things.

Don't know if you're dreaming about elementary or high school. I used to have dreams about being at high school and zombies attacking. I had to lock up the school and there were too many doors. I felt very afraid.

That dream came in times of my life where I was dealing with a lot of fear. It came from all directions, because ultimately the situation I wasn't in wasn't safe or I was avoiding the truth about something...

Thanks for sharing and sorry if this isn't relevant. I love dreams. :)

experiences dreamtime although many fail to remember when they wake up. I ain't a know-it-all but I've studied dreamtime going on 75 years and believe there are different elements to dreamtime, be they processing our daily life joys and problems or be they peaks through the inter-dimensional curtain and receiving precognition of future events or events going on behind closed doors. Now days modern psychology even has a term 'lucid dreaming' trying to describe whats beyond simply being a dream receiver to being interactive in our dreams ie. speaking with celestial visitors. The great Carl Jung said: "We do not dream, we are dreamt" and he also said: "Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darkness's of other people. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely. Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes."

Occasionally I have a similar dream, and I've been out of school for about 30 years. And yes, it leaves me with anxiety and in a panic - I find it very nerve-wracking. Then I wake, and have to remind myself that I'm not in school anymore, and wonder what else is bothering me. I suspect my brain is taking my real worries and somehow transferring them to a place that is no longer in my life, so it's somehow distanced. All the same, I wake up in a very anxious state. Hoping you can decipher what it is that is creating this anxiety and that this dream recurs less and less frequently for you.
