For Better of For Worse

I'm not the marrying kind I guess, but at least 3 of my exes married the very next person they found after me. I always figured if you were going to stay together your whole lives you'd just do it regardless of some ceremony.

Weird that, right? What business is it of the church or state who you spend your life with, and why is that important to some people?

Marriage does not mean much these days

In my 20's I had views like you. Heck, I had views of marriage and/or kids being something to be envious of. In my 30's 95% of people I knew who were married were divorced, and the few that stayed together always seemed to have one person with rich parents. In my 40's... I tend to understand mid life crisis's. Being with the same person even 15 years seems less fun than living life with new experiences.

Old age

It’s not much fun being alone when you’re old. But getting married is no guarantee that you won’t be. Partners die. People get divorced sometimes even after decades of marriage. I got married twice and I’m single now and have been for 23 years. I’ve had relationships during that time but I’ve not lived with anyone since my last (20 year) marriage. I can’t imagine doing it again at my age (almost 70), but I guess it would depend on the situation. I think the one thing that does appeal about marriage is the concept of commitment. If someone is willing to make that type of public and legal statement that they’re committed to being with you, that means something. But it’s certainly not necessary in order to actually be together. I know a couple who’ve been living together for 45 years and raised 4 kids, without ever getting married.
