It’s my life

My older sister finds it very strange how I feel comfortable telling some people that I have autism spectrum disorder. What does she care? I feel like she doesn’t even know me after all these years. Whatever I do is none of her fucking business but my own. Believe it or not, I’m very selective about who I share this with. I’ve only told a few close friends and coworkers that I trust because these are the good genuine people in my life.

My bar band musician older brother worries when I tell people about how he used to slag off Jimi Hendrix after he died, and by inference how his band was supposed to be so much better.

They weren't.

I know a few people who say they have autism spectrum disorder, two of them self diagnosed from things they read on the internet, they did not see a doctor. Another person consulted a specialist, they were told that they did not have it, did not accept that evaluation and decided they have it anyway. I don't know you so I can't say how you were diagnosed but I find it interesting how some people seem to really want to believe they have autism spectrum disorder. What's the saying, if everyone is special then nobody is special?

That if we don't talk about these things, they will go away. Nope. And if they have a problem with it, it's nice to know up front.

Or, a non-ableist, much less terrible way to look at it is that people finally have access to learning about these kinds of differences, such as the autism spectrum, and in doing so come to understand themselves and their challenges when they couldn't before, and yet live in a world where it's basically impossible for adults to be tested for autism spectrum despite knowing from the expertise of their own lived experience that it is part of their story. So they aren't diagnosed, but are autism spectrum. It has nothing to do with "wanting to be special", that's a really gross thing to weaponize against neuro-divergent folks.
