Sundays

It's been decades and decades since things opened up on Sundays. Yes, almost everything but essential services and entertainment venues used to be closed. There was a societal sense that the one day was meant for relaxing, family time, home time or whatever. All these years later, even after working Sunday shifts all through my career, it still feels inappropriate somehow when I get a phone call or email about business on a Sunday. (Retired, but still working PT from home). I kindly reply as needed, but hey...

Just don’t

Unless you’re contractually required to attend to business matters on Sunday, just don’t. Unfortunately with the advent of technology like smartphones (and emails before that), too many people assume that they’re entitled to an immediate response regardless of the day or time. Replying to them after regular work hours sets a precedent, so just stop doing it. Eventually people will figure it out.

A Day of Rest

Two competing explorers left Upper Canada at the same time. One of the explorers was a staunch religious guy who did not believe in working on the Sabbath and forced his expedition to take Sunday off to study the bible. The other guy was had a strong work ethic who pushed his expedition to travel as far as they could on every day. The expedition that took Sundays off made it farther West than the expedition that travelled every day.

It's interesting, how differing of opinions I suppose most people might have on this topic, depending on age and demographics. I can see where you're coming from considering your history you described, but for me, years and years have gone by that I've been wishing the slimmed business hours far and wide, and lack of availability of necessities like doctors offices being open, etc, causes a lot of unnecessary stress that I wish could be done away with. Sunday is often a day that I'd like to be able to get a lot of things done, and its like a disappointment every time.
