I went to a funeral. There was a non stop presentation of images overhead. The deceased persons travel images: cruises, beaches, drinks in hand, cruises, beaches, more drinks in hand. It made me think about what I want to show at my own funeral. And I don’t want my travel pictures showing in an endless loop. It looked utterly self indulgent and meaningless. We’re here for a short short time. Are we just here to feel good, masturbate, watch life drift by? I want my life to have more meaning. How did I serve the community, how did I care for things, did I make any changes for the greater good. What sacrifices I made for someone else. Did I care about and do anything about others well being. I never had these thoughts before of what my legacy may be. But vacation pictures are not how I want to be remembered by. Strange as it may sound, I don’t want to be remembered for living a life of pleasure.

But

But standing on beaches with drinks in our hands equals "living life to the fullest" - as long as you make sure that you've whitened your teeth before taking the photo. I thought the whole point of life was to show people pictures of gourmet meals that you ate at a restaurant and new ways that you apply make-up. Sounds like your late friend was a huge success.

Get with the program. Substance and decency are for looooozers.

I like most of this confession, but I will offer a thought. What meaning does life have once you retire? Youth is easy to find meaning. Once you've lived a life, you've paid off your mortgage, you've owned your business, you've completed your tasks, then what? I say this because the pandemic has taken travel away from boomers and snowbirds and without that, the 60+ don't have the dream retirement they had just a few years ago. Watching tv. visiting your kids ad nauseam, spending money you've spent all your life. driving to the store. The cruises and beaches are why they worked hard all their lives. Watching all their friends come and go isn't nearly as fun for older people.

What's wrong with m/b-ing?

Oct 11, 2021 at 7:23am

Males over 40 who don't get prostate cancer which is devastatingly fast to death. Woman over 50, from what I understand, go through menopause which makes sex painful and self pleasure the most realistic thing. If you don't m/b, that's great. You get a gold star for being so awesome compared to the other 99% of society.

Everyone wants to be a living martyr

Generational change. You want to have a current social media view of yourself, saving the whales, helping the homeless, maybe a F Trump sign cryptically in the background of one picture. The amount of likes also noted of the time you helped and photo captioned helping an old person across the street. That was a good day. You don't remember the old person or their name, but you do remember that you got a good angle of yourself helping someone. The sunlight perfectly reflected the shadow on the good side of your face. The comments on that post were humbling. Strangers were awe of your amazingness towards helping those less fortunate....

Confusing

Why others spend their lives trying to help people, that don't even care about themselves, is beyond me.

Yup….

….my travel pics will be pretty boring. No resorts, no cruises, no luxury / all inclusive, destinations. No time shares w/pool & swizzle sticks. No Vegas/ Palm Spring jaunts. They’ll just have to be entertained by home improvement projects, the gardening archives, second hand vehicle repairs, soccer, local hikes, biking, the occasional prank, etc.

I don't know you and this is good

But I can see someone writing this and also be participant in home bidding war so rampant for decades that drains blood out of quality of life for all.

Your idea doesn’t sound strange, just slightly anhedonic.Human ambition has gotten us to the point of almost no return, after all,and I’d rather consider the lilies in the field and how they grow than let vanity dictate my decisions. To each their own.

very good friend of mine, told me something the other day.
I'd like to pass it on to you, 'cause I believe what he said to be true. He said we're here for a good time-not a long time- so have a good time the sun can't shine every day
