Finally happened

I'm officially Married with Children and I completely understand how Al Bundy was disenchanted by the world.

When my first child was born it flipped a switch in my inner reality i didn't even know i had. It was such unexpected beautiful magic I was floating off the ground for days and, as my child (then more children) grew, they became my greatest treasures. And, their presence helped me incredibly learn the value of life.

When I first read this post I thought… Archie Bunker and All in the Family? I must be dyslexically advanced.

I’m officially Single with Regret and I somewhat understand how Ted Bundy was disenfranchised with the world.

Al Bundy could afford a house on a shoe salesman salary.

Sometimes it's the other way around... At least I'm more likely to outlive them. I could dump them in long care homes haha.

... two regrets relate to reproduction.

(1) Had a live-in girlfriend when I was in my late teens, early 20s. She had an abortion. I'd have a 16 year old now if not.

(2) Had a serious girlfriend in my mid 20s, she wanted to have a kid (her mother encouraged it) and I, because I knew my parents would just tell me to 'abort it' again, said no.

I know people who were, like, street drug addicts in teir teens who had kids without even knowing who the father is, who did just fine. It's been a serious blow to my confidence that my parents (and her parents, in (1)) encouraged abortion for purely economic reasons---obviously if a street kid with no parents can have a kid successfully, I would have done just fine.

And I would not say Al Bundy was disenchanted---he was resigned. Me, I could go and do whatever I wanted and I have nothing tying me down. If you think of your future as coming at you from your past (your past dictates your future), as a sort of physics problem, you can see how having kids, being married, etc. just creates, of necessity, a sort of resignation to "this is what life is for the next X years."

I think the best anyone can do is learn to enjoy that sort of situation---and I know enough people with kids to know that it's not all roses, but, in the end, they will have someone to visit them if they are old and in the hospital, and I won't.

So, look on the bright side: if you treat your kids well, and you are old, they will want to look after you. That's something you cannot buy.

You are obviously a man and can have a family at any age. We are most likely a similar age (judging by the age your child would be now if you’d had that child with woman #1) and I could still have them if I wanted. I don’t want them. I have all the freedom I could ever want and it doesn’t make me feel any less valid as a human being to not have children. Children can be a blessing and a curse and I’m not willing to risk the latter to fill some sort of void that most people seem to have in their lives when it comes to reproducing. I don’t have that void and am happy to have a pet at some point.
