I did it!

Today is my last day in retail. After many years off and on, this is it. Next week I move to the island for a job more in line with my interests and education. I’m so freaking excited to never serve shorty customers again. Some of you out there need to take a hard look at yourselves and how you treat people. All the eye rolling, passive aggressive “sigh” and what not. We don’t care. You are not special or important because you buy things. lol

I have...

... worked a bit of retail and also volunteered extensively where I'm not even being paid. My view is the most people whether they understand it's what they're doing or not is they feel that they're too good to serve. No I've also never really had difficulties with customers or people I worked with in the volunteer setting. The people I had the most trouble with we're co-workers who didn't like my actual desire to serve. Because as you've pointed out you don't care well if you don't care that comes across to people. You're not as good a poker player as you think you are. When I do something that involves other people I do genuinely care about them. That comes across. In one nonprofit I worked at I helped a developmentally disabled man do some phone calls and some photocopying and this and that and the other thing and it meant that he was able to get a much better living situation because he was being treated improperly by his conservators. Most of my co-workers felt they were too good to spend the hour-and-a-half he needed to go at his Pace to do these things. And this isn't because we were just Doling out our time and we didn't have enough time to spend most of them just like to sit at their desks and play on Facebook. I know you don't do that in retail but still everyone is special and everyone is important just because they're a human being

You are so right! It would be a better world if everyone worked service to others for a meaningful amount of time. Hopefully, people would know and remember what it is like and would act accordingly. Congrats on the new job!

Why to the island? I don't get it, why is everyone moving here? It's opportunists like you that make it IMPOSSIBLE for us who have grown up here to find a place to love, driving the rents so high that Vancouver seems cheaper.

Stay away.

Companies like to attract good and qualified workers. Maybe there is a lack of such people on the island?
