Thanksgiving

Today at work, a coworker mentioned that he had multiple invitations to Thanksgiving dinners at various people's homes, and had to choose which invitations to accept. He's going to one on Sunday and another one on Monday. I will be home alone for Thanksgiving. I didn't feel particularly sad about it until today. No one has invited me anywhere, and there's no one I could invite to spend the day with me. My existence matters so little to anyone.

Let's connect the dots. On Thanksgiving, we thank people. For being a part of our lives. For doing things. For helping.

Try making yourself matter to people by doing things for them. Instead of whining that no one dotes on you, why don't YOU plan a party for anyone else feeling low?

At that gathering, you might learn there are two kinds of people in the world, people who give and people who take. Try to be a giver. Be thankful for the givers. Avoid the takers.

So what. Your coworker happens to live in a socialised environment where they are so insignificant that they think their personal problems are interesting to anyone else.

Get drunk.

Well….

I’m on my own, too. Kids are out of town, no other family here, no friends to spend it with.

Will say - once I was invited to someone’s Thanksgiving dinner because they didn’t want me to be alone, but I would have felt better being at home: I felt awkward, like my singleness was being pointed out to me, and never fully felt comfortable. (In a nutshell, for me - which sounds ungrateful - it felt a bit patronizing.)

I’m spending my time this weekend focusing on what I’m grateful for, and doing whatever I need to do to keep my mental health in check.

The coworker may’ve been bragging because he/she was relieved not to be at home alone, but that doesn’t mean that being at home alone means you’re a social pariah. It just means that this is how it is, at this point in time. Don’t beat yourself up about it - find stuff to do that makes you happy, and be kind to you. Cheers.

gee whiz, treat yourself - your existence is important. get your favourite drink, smoke, starbux exotic whatever and do up a turkey or ham or even some kentucky fried or a mcchicken with fries and make yourself happy happy. you will have a great Thanksgiving anyway because you can. rent a movie and stuff your gob with pie and ice cream. right? right!

No sweat

Don’t sweat the small stuff. Let your coworker brag all they want about their own little world. Just focus on yourself and do whatever makes you happy at Thanksgiving. If you have the muscle and skill, cook up a nice meal for yourself. If not you can always order takeout from your favourite restaurant. Try some pleasant scheduling. Maybe go for a run, bike ride swim bench press workout etc. Maybe book an appointment for a massage or watch a funny movie. Take care of yourself.

Been there - it does suck, but now I treasure it

You're alone at thanksgiving. Healthy in your home. Better than being alone at thanksgiving in hospital attached to a ventilator. I'm alone at thanksgiving too, and at christmas and birthdays and easter, but I work so much with not enough time off, at least I can get some home cleaning/vaccuming done. Although it does appear that I have a mouse in my apartment. Not trying to make you feel bad, but I was really sick with undiagnosed celiac one year - the doctors hadn't figured out what was wrong with me yet, and I just kept praying for my life to go back to the way it was. Someday something bad might happen and you will realize how lucky you are to be alone and healthy and you will want to go back to it. Also, if you can get a pet, you will matter to the pet. I suggest something cuddlier than a mouse. Best of luck - you do matter.

Grateful

Oct 11, 2021 at 3:00pm

Okay I will try hard to be grateful as I have alot to be grateful for. But (I am double vaxxed & am very careful) would it have killed any of my friends or acquaintances to think about who's an orphan out there this Thanksgiving and maybe cleared an extra spot? I would've been happy to even bring my own food! I'm good company or so I thought but come on guys, think a little bit about how hard this year has been for people especially orphans and maybe reach out a little. I've done the same in the past for orphans and it would be nice to have it returned some day. Not everyone has a loving family around them.

I've been in Vancouver for 12 years and have never been invited to any Thanksgiving or holiday gathering. I'd love to host, but my place is so small just one person is "cozy." Even when my mother died, no one bothered to invite me to anything or ask how I was doing. Not sure if it's a Vancouver thing or what. Just make the holiday your own and do your best.

@Grateful here again

Okay that did sound a bit victim-y sorry, but I was definitely feeling sorry for myself this weekend. Will create my own thing next time for sure.
