Truth be told

I just learned the truth about what really happened to my childhood security blanket. Turns out it wasn’t accidentally left behind at that motel my family stayed at that night. My Mom just confessed that she told me that because that decided that 5 years old was too old for a blanket. I’m 68 and it still hurts me to know that they denied me even that comfort.

Some people just suck at parenting. You go and get yourself a similar one or one you like and snuggle in it for as long as you damn well please.

Sorry to hear

That is shitty of your parents. My girls still love theirs, as teens, even if they often forget about them. I'm sorry you didn't get to choose if and when you put your security blanket aside; I second the other comment, go get yourself a fantastic blankie to cuddle!

Those items are precious

My mom did the same thing to me, when I was about 8 or 9. Blanket just gone with no explanation. It’s one of many ways my mom is insensitive. She told my dad last night on his birthday that his way of cooking sucks. I had fond memories of my Nephew carting around a headless teddy bear that was falling apart. He loved that thing. My kid is 11 and I won’t ever toss out his blankie. I agree with the first commenter: get yourself a new blankie to cuddle.

Something like that happened to me too.

Also, our family dog "jumped the fence" one day and was never seen again.

Security blanket

A security blanket can take the shape of many things. It could be a phone, food, drugs or people. Don't be sad, be happy for the truth.

My blankie even had a name it was "sniffer". Even though it was chewed into a 12"x12" square by our puppy at the time, I loved it and sniffed it (to relax), until Mom made me throw it out. I still have a habit of brining my hand to my face like I was sniffing it when I'm stressed! People call me out on it all the time. I don't blame my Mom though, maybe she should have taken it away from me before I development that habit.

Blanket Stories

Nov 26, 2021 at 1:38pm

My daughter had one of these, and I still have it to this day (40 years later). When she was about 4, someone at a barbecue party thought she was too old for it and held it over the fire to burn it up while she was watching, and howling of course. I had to step in forcefully and note that was not his call, and that's not how things are done in any case. She gave up the blanket when school started and she'd moved on naturally.

I'm sorry that happened @op.

I'm sorry your mother took a valuable source of comfort and safety away from you. It was the wrong thing to do. Parents make all kinds of mistakes. Some make minor errors, some have huge lapses of judgement. My advice would be to try to forgive her for this mistake, purchase yourself a new soft, warm blanket for the winter, and think about what other ways you can give yourself comfort and safety. Is it a warm cup of tea? Lighting a candle? Calling a friend to see how they're doing? Give yourself those things because you deserve them.

I agree with the first comment; some people love their kids but make terrible parenting decisions. You let yourself be hurt about that. Parents used to be so insensitive and underhanded in their methods.
