Space

I don’t know why but two acquaintances, whom I see twice a year each (meaning not a close relationship at all) like to bring up each time I see them how small my home is. Yeah, it’s small because I can’t afford anything larger in Vancouver. It’s 450 sq feet of condo. It’s paid off so I’m living pretty stress free. But for these acquaintances to bring it up and rub it in my face every 6 months sucks. I do t comment or question anyone else’s living situation. I guess they just need to feel superior over me in square footage.

Freedom

Like the song says: Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. You have made a smart investment giving yourself a place to live in this expensive city. How long does it take to clean up? Worth it just for that alone.

Sounds annoying

Maybe size matters to them for compensatory reasons. 450 square feet of paid-off property sounds pretty sweet to me.

Good for you for not commenting on or questioning anyone else's living situation; this demonstrates that you are emotionally evolved.

Sitting in a tiny condo beats sitting in traffic. They rub it in your face… probably because they’re I don’t know… petty, insecure, and jealous. What age are these kids?

You're doing it wrong, you're supposed to live beyond your means. Ultra-low lending rates and booming housing market have helped push the debt-to-income ratio in Canada to a record high. Canadian Households Have $1.73 In Debt For Every Dollar They Make, but you just have to keep up appearances right, and appearances are everything in shallow Vancouver.

Those folks are just tacky and have serious issues!
Good on you for owning your own space and being happy with it.

You could say….

….you hope they don’t leave all their worthless stored crap for someone else to cleanup one day?

I don't understand

These people are barely acquaintances. Why are they even in your home? Why have you invited them back again after they've been rude before?
Where is your backbone? It's your home. Stop inviting them.
There is no social situation that precludes you from disinviting them to any future outings at your home. These people make you feel uncomfortable in your own home. There's your reason. They're just a step up from strangers. They have no value to protect by refusing them.

I get it

I have heard a version of this from people - and I had a house!

Look, you can be mad at them for being stupidly insulting, but to me the whole culture accepts being stupidly insulting in the guise of honesty and speaking your truth, etc. Manners are old-timey.

What I suspect is really going on is that they look at your place and they realize that they would not have the discipline with material acquisitions to avoid turning that space into a hoarder's lair. Because 450 square feet will not allow sprawl, junk, crap, maybe-I-will-need-this-in-five-years stuff. What they are really telling you is that they would be freaked out with that kind of orderliness.

That you can do it is wonderful, actually. Having moved more than a few sick relatives to smaller quarters, I have come to see acquisitions as burdens and have entirely stopped buying knicknacks and things I might need, because I only want stuff that I actually need and/or love.

450 is plenty for the organized mind. They ain't got it. What they are telling you is a confession of inadequacy.

@i don’t understand
You seemed to have jumped to conclusions leading to lecturing me. The acquaintances have not been in my small condo. They only know about it because we talked about where we live. ( I would never invite people over for them to insult me about my place. )
