Farewell to Thee ECE

I worked as an Early Childhood Educator for a decade. It was good as a stepping stone, but not for the rest of my life. So I gave in my resignation and decided to move on after putting in ten years. The creative aspect like story time, arts & crafts, music and outdoor fun is what I miss the most about working in this field. On the other hand, I can do without the burnout of dealing with helicopter parents, toxic co-workers, diapers and out of control behaviors. And don't even get me started on these pathetic wages. Start paying staff what they're actually worth and maybe you won't have a hard time finding people. Then their morale won't be so low on the job. My health and wellness are worth far more than $16 per hour...no thank you. Sure, the $10 a day childcare plan sounds promising for parents, but what about the workers? I went on to another job where I get paid way more than that. I'm working full time, making more money and no longer stressed out as I was before. So Childcare, it's been real but I'm going to cut you loose. So long forever.

Ugh I'm in the same situation. I love the kids and it is fulfilling work, but everything you said I can relate to. I'm curious what field you went into afterwards? Trying to figure out my road map. All the best!

You recognized what works best only for you. At least you gave it a shot and then knew that it’s not the right fit for you. Good on you for knowing that. All the best to you in your new high-paying career path.

Library Work. If you have a diploma as a Library Technician you can do children's services, but in a fun context! Story times, outreach , festivals...Library workers tend to be kind, community oriented individuals. And public libraries are actually doing well right now, so pay no attention to the to the uninformed buzz.

... a preschool. People are on waiting lists, run one. It's good to have parent participation, google that. You will get a much better quality of client. You just need to look at it from the perspective of an employer.

A lot of employers will say things like health and wellness are primary focuses but it's not worth the paper it's printed on. It's one of those fictitious constructs employers created, like diversity/inclusivity, to make employees feel they're being looked after. When an opportunity comes up to back up the words, their actions couldn't be further from reality. Glad you made it out with your values and health intact. No job is worth sacrificing health over as many of us are sadly finding out.

I put childcare behind me in 2013 and it was the right decision.

Parting ways

Being in this industry felt like a marriage. We loved each other yet we couldn’t stand each other anymore. We split up for a while and then got back together just to see if perhaps there’s a slight possibility that we could work things out. But it became obvious that we were certainly not meant to be together for life. After so many discussions and lots of serious thinking, we both decided it was best to go our separate ways. We parted on good terms and haven’t looked back since. It’s life. Life goes on and the world hasn’t come to an end. Good luck in your new career. I hope you become successful in whatever you chose to pursue.
