I miss my childhood home

Near main and king edward. I lived there for nearly twenty years. It's like I live in a different reality now, so many homes later -- a much darker and more painful one. Every time I look at old pictures of the block, it instantly triggers those older, largely happier feelings and memories. Of a time when I was still capable of feeling okay, effortless and at ease. Those positive states weren't even the majority of my experiences there, but still the living memories remain. I don't want to regress back to that stage in life, but it's nostalgic.

Many generations have had hangover breakfasts at Helens Grill. I also remember the donut shop at 33rd. I think it was Duffins. Happier time.

... near there, I went to John Oliver. Good times. I remember the old IGA, with all of those apartments, near Fraser and 29th.

I don't like how the development is going in the area. I guess I could start going to City Council meetings, but they dont listen.

I have no happy memories from my abusive childhood. No birthday parties,no summer holidays doing whatever it is that kids normally do, no fun times, no etc.
What few dark memories I do have are just always being afraid and confused, with hatred and anger anger towards my POS 24/7 abusive parents.

If you went to Jayo you must surely remember Paul’s Subs. To this day the best sandwiches I’ve ever had.

I hear you on the direction of the city thing - it's become essentially a gentrified, unaffordable resort for the rich - with horrible alienating architecture all around to boot. I mean generally, in most areas. Things could be done about this, but basically nothing does get done.

@Am Jealous -- that is terrible :( I grew up with an abusive parent who had me institutionalized repeatedly over many years, mostly for no valid reason. I can't imagine what it's like having super abusive parents to the point of never even having birthdays or any positive memories in earlier childhood, though...

@Same Here -- it's strange how things keep getting for the most part, darker and more horrible over the decades. I've seen a bunch of stuff from the 80s, and it seemed in many ways (here, anyways) brighter, more connected and communial, and freer than the 90s which I grew up in. Same when comparing the 90s to the 2000s, and the 2000s to the 2010s, etc

I thought we were supposed to be making positive expansive progress in most directions, yet it seems like that's largely an illusion...

I arranged my schedule so I had spares 1-3 morning a week in Grades 11 and 12, and I would go and buy myself breakfast at the place where Paul's was. I can't remember if it was still that, but I'd get eggs, bacon and hasbrowns and toast. At home I was only allowed to have cereal. Once i started eating this way, my grades all shot up, and I got into University. I'd never been stupid, I just didnt like applying myself. Eating a normal hot breakfast instead of cereal and milk (not nutritionally complete) 3 days a week substantially improved my grades, so I am a big believer in nutrition.

As for the environs, I went to Neptoon and bought lots of CDs.

I remember buying the Velvet Underground and Nico, the one with the banana on it, and the guy looked at it and said "wow, you sure you want that? When they were doing this on the east coast, we were all on the west coast dropping acid, they were shooting heroin, you sure you want this one?" or something like that. Unfortunately, he did not go FURTHUR and tell me to guy the Grateful Dead stuff they had, but I found that on my own in good time.

We occupy a corner lot in the vicinity of King Edward and Main (give or take) and the number of cars now, we used to have no one parking in front of our house, or on the side. Now we always have people there.

The City is just not run very well. God help us if Mark Marissen becomes mayor, but that is another story.

Said he didn't remember the 70s but I sure remember him. Saw him at the Silly Center in '78. Guy in front of me yells out during a mellow song "Bowie's queer!" -Crickets. After an uncomfortably long and awkward span the same guy yells "Bowie's king!"
