Life isn't fair

My ex left me in the middle of this pandemic, with no warning, and after I had been painfully laid off from my dream job. I put up with a ton of bullshit from them over the decades we were together, but never thought the relationship was worth ending. Since then, life has become worse and worse for me to the point of severe debt, health issues and major depression, while they are flourishing. I've just found out that they are engaged, and we have been apart for less than a year. Why is life so incredibly unfair? I never asked for this and my life has been hell. They made a choice, and their life has been roses and champagne. Fuck.

You're doomed to repeat this misery until you realize you are the source of it. I know to sounds cruel but bare with me. Your partner left you, why? Because they're malicious and evil? Or realistically you weren't bringing to the table what you used to, upholding your end of the bargain, all in all- what were you doing to actively keep them interested just as they were doing for you?

You seem to be in a miserable rut but are you just throwing yourself around in self-pity or are you trying to take active steps to turn your office around? Nothing comes easy and it's extremely easy to look at people who seem to have it all, and make assumptions. The reality is people put effort into the things-into the people- and lives they want. Stop being a victim and do something about it.
Best of luck

that first comment is cruel beyond measure. there is a time to get back on that horse but no, now is not that time. You have had a great deal of losses and it's natural to grieve. People who leave you when times are hard show who they are and you are lucky to know now. Any partner worth their salt will help you through the loss. Obvs. there is a limit to that. All I can say is life is long. Your partner may or may not face their own character one day. Be the kind of person who does not do this. It is a shitty commentary on their commitment. Good luck and I'm sorry for your losses.

The relationship AND the job. Change is inevitable and nothing is static in life. It’s time to stop looking in the rear view mirror and look at the road where you are going. Bitterness will leave you empty handed.

Your life is good. Your ex will make their own life and possibly their own hell. If they do well good on them. If they don't, like whatever. You really don't know if their life is roses & champagne. Roses have thorns and champagne can give you a wicked hangover. You had no match if this is what happened. Pull up your big girl panties, declare bankruptcy and start over. It's worth it and so are you. New Year, New Start! Good luck.

"Change is inevitable and nothing is static in life."

Wow, that's a cool bumper sticker.

I'll remember to tell that to the next indigenous community whose water-source is poisoned.

Oh, wait, you'd never think that way about THAT, would you?

Going bankrupt was the best thing I could have done for mental health

Speaks volumes about you- when taking responsibility, not wallowing in self pity, and getting on with your life is deemed by you to be "cruel beyond measure"

Why does everyone feel the need to disguise gender by using "they"? Stupid and inaccurate. Just own up to which sex you are talking about.

Why is it so important to you all the time?
