The Lifespan of a Chameleon

Five years. I am nearing the end of a life sentence I’ve served after losing my home of close to ten years. The landlord chose to evict 6 people in a 6 bedroom home, to house a young son. I dream of affording a home that can’t be taken out from under me. But then I wake up.

Renters

If you rent, you’re subject to the whims of the owner. No landlord owes you a place to live. YOU owe yourself a place to live, so look into owning. I don’t understand why people in GS Confessions think “their” rental home should be theirs forever.

Canada is such a big and relatively populated country

and over 90% of the population lives close the Southern border. Why are we stuck in the big shities? Those of who head for the hills are thankful. If you feel stuck in the shities because of family responsibilities consider that you are actually doing your family a favour by getting out while the gettins good.

I've heard many people say it's entitled to think you should be able to own a home in the city in which you live and work.

Home is such a basic NEED. It's the roots for everything. The thought of that kind of instability for the rest of my life makes me seriously consider suicude.

Once my landlord sells this place, not only will I not be able to afford to live in the city, I won't be able to afford to live anywhere nor can I afford to move.

What future?

Oh, that excuse.

They move in some family for a year to flush out renters because they can't raise your rents more than 3% per year. The son won't really live there and after a year he'll move out. Then they'll open the house up to new renters again. It's to cash in on higher rents. Oldest trick in the book.
No idea on the solution. If you rent, you prepare to be nomadic. But you aren't anchored to property, either. Pros and cons, bud. Pros and cons.

Wondering

In some cities, especially in other countries, it’s completely normal to rent the same place your whole life, raise your kids there etc. I don’t know what policies make that different here, or maybe it’s just the economics of a population surge, housing as an investment, I don’t know. I’d like someone to explain to me why we can’t expect stable, affordable rentals here, why we should/shouldn’t expect that this could be a reality in Vancouver.

Because it's an overpriced city and people are greedy. If they get a new tenant, they can raise the rent as much as they want.

Check out Denmark rental policies. Move there maybe? Our friends moved there and had to sign a year lease, not unusual, but had to pay like 4 maybe 6 months upfront. There were way more protections for the renter but also you had to commit way more as renter. And I think there was something else like the rent can never be raised or something crazy. Hmmm maybe it was that you can’t sell the property for a profit, anyway do check out Denmark. There was also something else like you had to buy your own washer dryer and bring it. Nothing in life is free.
