I didn’t think I had any hobbies. I’ve been pushing myself to try to find things to do that resonate for me and help me feel a better sense of self. Why is it so hard? Why does nothing seem to stick? Why don’t I know who I am? Over the holidays I was alone and the time allowed me to just be. It was a welcome and much needed cadence for the new year. And I’m only coming to realize I do have interests and hobbies, I guess I wasn’t able to acknowledge them because I have always judged myself to not be good enough. If I could just find that one thing, maybe everything would click and I would makes sense. Only in the past few weeks has something become apparent to me. Not everyone collects notebooks or specifically seeks out having a typewriter as a kid, and feeling a thrill each time GS publishes something you write. Not everyone does these things. I never understood when I met authors why they’d always ask, “Do you write?”. I’ve always assumed that everybody writes. Do you? Maybe writing is my hobby.

I write for my own therapy

and I consider it my hobby because it is something I frequently do and enjoy. Whether I am adept or not doesn't define that fact. Writers are scarcer than you may think. Perhaps if you're in an artistic bubble they might appear everywhere, but as someone who is in no particular bubble, who floats about between varied spaces, they are far and few in between. I have been writing ever since I learned to pencil words, drawing ever since I picked up a crayon, and I don't know how I could exist without papers to pour it all onto. I wonder how others do, because the art of expression is oxygen to me. Singing, I do, quietly. Surviving is one thing but living is another, and life, at least to me, is all about words. I fell in love with a writer once.

Maybe you could use your writing talents to write for a sitcom.
Funny stuff and making people laugh is the best medicine.
You funny man :)

Good for you, OP. I hope you continue to develop your voice and express yourself on the page and screen.

I've found that keeping a notebook handy for jotting down unfiltered thoughts can be a low-pressure way to keep a writing practice.

It's cool to read back over old scribbles and say "hey, that's kind of a gem in the rough, and I'm glad I captured the essence of what I was feeling when it was fresh in my mind."

Thanks for sharing this inspiring confession as we enter the new year, and sending positive encouragement your way. If you're looking for one, this is your sign to keep going!

I like...

... writing. Every day I write about 5000 words+ on Internet Relay Chat (Undernet #vancouver is fun), various blogs, the Straight's Confessions, etc. etc.

I have done this for, gosh, since I was about 15, which is, let's say 15 years.

So, that is 15 * 365 * 5000 = 27,375,000 words

They can't all be zingers, but, man, it feels good to use the fingers. I wish my family had been rich enough to afford a piano + lessons, but unfortunately all we got was Nintendo + a Computer.

Actually, I don't know if I really like writing so much, but if you talk, nobody really listens. They don't read very well either, but at least with writing on the INternet, you never know who is listening.

Especially that ol' AI. Who knows how I have trained it over the years!

I said your not using the word Cadence in the proper context.
Why would you even try to play with mother nature ?
