I took a

short flight to Seattle the other day, my first flight in almost three years. I used to fly all the time and travel extensively, but this time I nearly had a panic attack just being in the airport. Scared of everyone, scared to touch anything, totally OCD about germs. No one talking or smiling. Really bad vibes, but at least I ventured out! I’m hoping we can get back to normal at some point

seatac is so crap. living in asia for about a decade now it's always shocking to come back and see how awful north american airports are. I don't understand how jakarta or manila can be better than a major us city!

Proud of you for dipping the toe in.

Travel used to bring me so much joy, but I’m sure I would respond with the same fear you describe if I tried to take a plane or train. I guess we’ve all got some rewiring to do after being so extensively boundaried.

lucky you

I wish I could get on a plane outta Vancouver, it feels like an open air prison. Just anywhere, thank you.

For me it's the trouble to fly anywhere and the extra stuff you have to do also the possibility of flights being canceled when you get there.
When I used to holiday in the 90s I flew everywhere and all you needed was a pair of underwear and a passport it was so much fun and not tedious like it is now.
I rarely fly now not because of fear but the hassle

I never travelled that lightly, but there was a time when you could throw your medium-sized backpack into the overhead storage, and be off heading through immigration ASAP, for an adventure.

Flying holds no appeal for me now. I loved it when the seats were far apart enough that people didn’t have to be contortionists to sit in them, you always got a meal unless it was really short flight, and you didn’t have to wait for hours because of all the security restrictions. Now it just feels like torture, both physically and mentally, so I’m going to have to experience the rest of the world virtually. : (

Flying to Seattle

Just for flying's sake?

By the time you drive to the airport, park, go through security, wait at the gate, then fly there, you would have been in Seattle already if you drove.

Beautiful. I totally get what you wrote and dream of that freedom too, but hope it's not going to be anytime soon because that would mean that my last & much loved parent has died. Hoping for the century point or possibly beyond!
Hey, Betty W almost made it to 100!
George B made it to 100 and had his big Caesars birthday party then passed not long after.
<3 flying/sailing/train, etc off on an adventure.

Airlines won't allow you t bring anything as big as a backpack into the passenger cabin, it must be checked, so you have to wait for your luggage. Back in the day, you could.

Getting away gets difficult when we get older, doesn't it? Things become so much more complicated. Being an adult is overrated, we've been duped.
