trapped in the worlds greatest city

Love Vancouver. Been here 20 years. Lucky to have been here this long. Lost a bunch of "friends" for not being a covid denier Not making enough for a future, not enough saved up to move for one, too old to change jobs. No regrets.

It’s supremely expensive living here. Literally everyone is trapped. It’s impossible to make even a lateral move. Even my friends who own a run down house on the West side can’t afford to move to another house. We’re locked. It’s a great place to live, but bills. My sibling has a nice place to live but is taking out loans to keep afloat. Lately with everything reopening, my wallet has stayed shut. I DON’T want to blow all my money on shows, concerts, restaurant meals anymore. I just want to save for a very unknown future. The future is not going to be cheap.

Yet another brain washed victim, trying to convince him/herself that the right choice was made in staying.

Mmmm...

How do you know it's the "world's greatest", if you can't afford to travel? I've met so many people in Van, who claim it's the greatest city, but have been to very few places outside of Canada because they can't save any money because of the cost of living here is outrageous.

Are you familiar with a confirmation bias? A confirmation bias is the tendency of people's minds to seek out information that supports the views they already hold. It also leads people to interpret evidence in ways that support their pre-existing beliefs, expectations, or hypotheses. In short, you love it because you have to love it because you have no alternative.

Hey you and me are in the exact same boat

Sometimes I grieve but mostly feel confident in the reality of life after life

It seems like it would be the opposite in Van from what the news tells us about the numbers. Sad that you lost tho, perhaps you happened to be friends with all the very small number of them. I don't think you're alone in it, I doubt many are able to save these days, if they're able to live at all on what they make, wages are stagnant, cost of living constantly going up, unaffordable food, unaffordable housing, new/higher taxes, it's criminal how some in govt are making six figures while others are on the streets, and their doors have been closed the past two years, they should have to return some of the money to the tax payers since they didn't work hardly a day...It is sad to not have people in your corner but it's probably for the best if you were miserable around them. Maybe my friends were more evolved but no one called any friend a 'non covid denier' or a 'covid denier'. We respected each others questions, opinions and friendships deepened, and strangely met more friends along the way. I don't know, were some looking for any excuse to unload anger, for certain relationships to fall away? I can't help but think a lot of people spent time in solitude focused on the wrong things that sadly led to deepening divisions. Loyalty, respect, compassion, history between people went out the window. Some families were divided and destroyed over their opinions too. It just all seems nuts but that's the world we find ourselves in. Best of luck finding new friends in soulless Van, you're gonna need it. As long as your happy where you are, and you seem to be, that's the most important part.

I also feel trapped and do have regrets. Can't move - very good deal on housing but actual situation sucks. No where else is sufficiently less expensive for me to live. Would love to get an RV but on pension. I am truly depressed and feel like I'm just waiting to die.

Was that person really being sarcastic? It's so hard to tell with the locals sometimes, they can be so culty, totally convinced it's a world-class, paradise on earth.
