Jumping (or not) thru hoops

Looking for a new job and not willing to do the “projects” anymore. I spent an entire weekend doing an “assignment” for an organization. Making it perfect down to the pixel. I didn’t get the job after spending 30 hours on the assignment. At another company, they’re asking me to make a video, before I have even ever spoke to anyone in the company for the job. Knowing the perfectionist than I am, I would probably spend another entire weekend on it. But im not doing it. Being a talking head is not what I do or in the job description. Im not jumping through these ridiculous hoops anymore for “the chance” to work for these companies. Interview me, face to face or virtually, ask to see my actual work. Now that I know how these companies hire, I will never spend money patronizing their businesses.

I am with you! I am ok with some showcase of skills to a certain degree. For a final interview (among others) I was just asked to do a 12 month marketing plan, showcase of the best possible strategies, a budget and so on. I had to decline. Companies need to be fair. This is just getting something for nothing.

Post names of these companies. I will not spend my money at them either.

Further to that, in another job application, there was a section where I could upload a video to “show off my pet or sing”. I almost feel like trolling and uploading something ludicrous.

I agree that uncompensated interview assignment culture is getting out of control. IMO it's a ploy to see how high you're willing to jump when told to.

While it's perfectly reasonable to test a candidate to see if they have the skills and talent necessary to do the job, employers need to pare down the tasks (no 30-hour projects or video production, for starters) and start budgeting for and paying candidates for their efforts.

Go independent and when they see your value, let them come make you a genuine offer - then bid them up :-)

You can rate employers online, including the interview process. I don't think I can mention any particular site on here but one is quite major and effective.

Some people / companies will do anything for free labour. When I was young the popular thing was for a prospective employer to require a candidate to work for nothing as a “training / trial” period. Typically for jobs requiring virtually no skill to perform, so in essence they often got 2-3 days of free labour. These companies who are asking for a prospect to give them their best work for zero dollars are no different. They’re just looking for a way to steal talent! Don’t fall for it!!
