Has nothing to do with being dumb. But you suggested it, so… maybe!

You Are Not Alone

Too funny. When we were at the height of the pandemic I would be shopping in the produce section trying to get those stupid bags open. Torn between licking my fingers (OH NO!) in front of everyone trying to open the damned things with everyone uber paranoid about spreading the virus. The solution was to get my fingers wet by touching (ANOTHER OH NO!) produce that had been sprayed with water to keep it fresh. What a pain in the ass.

You’re not alone. Kitchen garbage bags are a challenge too.

I can’t imagine how tough this would be for someone with arthritis or other mobility issues.

Those plastic bags are ridiculous and so hard to open. The secret is touch something wet in the produce area and then the plastic bag opens like butter. They are always misting the vegetables to keep them fresh, everything is moist in that area.
Or fight with the bag for an hour. Lol
Damn this comment sounds dirty reading it back to myself, but it's not ment too !

Sometimes the bag opens easier

if you wet the tips of your fingers on the droplets of water hanging from the spots where the veggies are spray watered .

Moisten your fingers in the mister (most produce sections have them). It's better than licking your dirty fingers in public, and most fingers will get the bag open. They just have to be a little bit moist, not soaking wet. I wrote my Master's Thesis on opening produce bags and I am currently working on my PhD in opening battery packages.

You're definitely not dumb! This problem is annoyingly common. Try placing the bag between the palms of both hands and rubbing back and forth as if to warm your hands. In the 'good old days' we'd think nothing of licking a thumb and forefinger. Bleh!

Solution: without water or spit

I’ve wasted minutes of my life trying to open produce bags.

They will easily open without water or spit involved if you do this:

Place the bag with the opening between your palms. Rub vigorously back and forth. Like warming up your palms together in the cold air. The static produced in the bags from the friction will separate the two sides and the bag will open.

I’ve done the spit thing and I always feel bad about doing this in public.

Alternatively use a spritz of hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol on the bags to get some traction.

Keep up the good work buying fruits and veg!!
