of Vancouverites to ask this. In many places NO ONE would ever ask about your job, thats the LAST thing they would ask. That is really really cringe and embarrassing and you shouldn't be dating these people.

If you are a woman, looking for a guy- few of us will even care if you are in between jobs.

it's an unavoidable question, why avoid it?
no shame in not having a job or if ur not into ur job.
how would the financially comfortable describe their "job" anyways?

more importantly, how do you ride over it so it no longer matters to you and hopefully, your potential special someone.
be the first to not jump to conclusion, they'll show themselves soon enough...
more importantly to separate "not working" from "I have debt and it could be an issue".

A friend of mine who lived abroad in the UK was telling me this same thing: people there are more skilled in the art of conversation to the extent where they know never to lead with "what do you do?"

Another acquaintance used to ask, "what are you up to these days?" because they believed asking directly about one's occupation is inherently classist.

I agree that inquiring about people's jobs is cringe and causes a lot of unnecessary social anxiety within those of us who have received judgmental jabs in previous conversations and feel that we don't measure up to some distorted and ever-changing bar. We need to move toward a different model of conversation.
