Disturbing

I can't help but wonder if there's something on the Island that is playing a role in young men turning into violent criminals. Not so long ago two young men from Port Alberni triggered one of the largest manhunts in Canadian history. Now this bank robbery. I don't like it. Not one bit.

I'm from Nanaimo, we used to call it Surrey by the sea, nanaim-hole, or no-MIND-o. It's a mess. If you were a young person and your number one priority in life wasn't leaving, then there was something wrong with you. Without exaggeration, those who didn't have that priority were weirdly and unnaturally dreamless, that's not normal for a young person. A young person should be full of curiosity and passion, not hiding in such a place.
Port Alberni was even worse. That was Vancouver Island's, Camden, New Jersey. It was ranked as the most dangerous place on Vancouver Island by Maclean’s Magazine, in 2017, so from my personal experience, the island does breed some deeply dysfunctional people.

it’s called toxic masculinity. Or the incel movement. Take your pick.

planet that is playing a role increasing young men turning into violent cuckoos and old men sending them into violent wars.
I guess the old saying is true…

In my opinion it’s not that “young men” have changed, it’s our instant society that has changed. With social media, pocket recording studios also known as smartphones and traditional media trying desperately to keep eyeballs fixated in order to generate ad revenue, any tragic event gets the spotlight treatment. There were plenty of bad things that happened 20 years ago, they just weren’t fed to us at every turn.

Yes it's called desperation and you will be seeing a lot more of it unfortunately.
It's a sign of unsettling times ahead.
