Just a wee bit forced

I’ve noticed couples and other groups my age are laughing a little too loud as people pass. It’s as if they want as many people to hear. Do they not hear the sick despair of their forced cackles? I do… through my earplugs. It’s tolerable then.

Assumptions

This is a giant assumption you’re making Op. Has it not occurred to you that they might just be having a good time for real? You are projecting your own misery and bitterness onto complete strangers. I’m sorry that you’re so unhappy, but please don’t assume that everyone else is just faking it.

Projection

Jul 6, 2022 at 6:03pm

When you automatically assume that the people around you are forcing their laughter just to annoy you, it’s called projecting. Maybe they’re just having a good time. I’m sorry that you’re not, but please don’t assume that everyone else is in the same mindset.

there have been times in my life when I've felt similarly, times when i was lonely, paranoid, and anxious. felt like everyone in public was laughing at me. when the sun came out and my self esteem returned, i realized it was all in my head all along

It's not all about you and your perspective. The assumptions you're making reek of overthinking brought on by excessive isolation. It's treatable and fixable. But only if you try.

On the bus

Jul 13, 2022 at 9:01am

I was sitting across from three people on the bus the other day… two were side by side, masks on. But laughing and chatting nonstop. The laughs of one girl were those nervous fake laughs. Signalling “We’re funny!” And I mean nonstop. The person a seat over with no mask and politely sitting there looked so uncomfortable. Some people are so courteous. We were told, if sick, wear a mask. But I guess spew as much air and breath as you can on the rest of the herd.
