Borderlands

Speaking a new language is challenging. Even harder when I’ve never heard it spoken around me before. I read the books that talk about the language and I hear people talk About it, but no one really speaks it. Even when I do come across concrete vocabulary it’s hard to remember the words, phrases and let alone when and how to say them. I want to be heard, understood, and acknowledged. I hear it’s best to be immersed to truly make progress with it. But where does a person go to learn how to speak with boundaries?

Would you feel better if I told you like people everywhere, it's mostly gossip and backstabbing? I lived in Europe and Asia for years.

I recommend watching YouTube videos and reading newspapers in the language to build up a nice passive vocabulary, and then find yourself people online or in person who speak it, and practice with them. Listen to music, delve into movies and TV shows... you can create your own mini immersion even when your not surrounded by the language. If it's Quebecois or Acadian French you're learning, there's tonnes of spoken content on the internet via the NBF/ONF, CBC-Radio Canada, Ecore+, and more... Be patient. You need though to consume lots of content in the language for native speakers of it. Even if you don't understand everything or barely anything at all, just use your ears and eyes to absorb the rhythm of it.... These days virtually everything is available in cyberspace for free, and for every language from Hokkien to Haida to Gaelic to Greek and beyond... Just know this: you'll be acquiring and learning the language you're whole life.
