My manager had a choice today: he could move one item from Box A to Box B as he's already in the office, or have me commute 2.5 hours to do the same. The item has no bearing on my paid work. If the item stays in Box A, it's not part of my job duties. He asked me to come in. Fortunately a coworker offered to move the item for me. Point blank I realized that my manager doesn't have my back at all and would prefer to do nothing and have me on transit for 2.5 hours. It's times like these I wish I were independently wealthy.

There are myriad ways to deal with this but silent revenge is the funnest. I put a small jelly bean in the receiver of someone's desk phone once. Rattled around for weeks on every call until I told them.
Harmless and so simple.
But you don't have to tell them. Even funner. =)

You were to be paid for that 2.5 hours commute to do x job then you should feel lucky. I would do it all day with a smile on my face.
You could always

Most companies operate along the same premise. They have lots of money and it really is 'Your Job' to make some of it yours. Your supervisor likely sees this fact and helps accommodate the charade. We need mass employment over cutthroat efficiency and things have been running just fine for a few years now so thank you very much for your input. If I can get six people doing your job instead of just one or two, I get a bigger bonus and you guys get more work. Remember, the company has a lot of money. It's your job to make some of it yours.

You need to discuss this face to face with your boss. If you say nothing, your boss might consider to do similar things. The ball is in your court.

Will be fun for managers who still have a job.
With mass layoffs coming in all sectors due to lower consumption the worker will be depended upon alot more who still has a job and the management that doesn't have the skills will be downsized if they don't pick up the slack for a smaller workforce.
Your going to see posts of unemployed managers whine and cry that they can't find work because they are not a good fit for the company:ie
They are dumb as shit.
The workers always prevail in the end.

It sounds like there are a couple of things to tease apart. 1) you get called in, 2) you are asked to do trivial things 3) you have a 2.5 hour commute. The first two can be solved with a quick convo about your job description. The last one is on you. Maybe get a job closer to home or carpool or ride a bike.
