The Watering Hole

Years ago I spent a lot of time at this place. There were regulars and the music playing had a particular sound. There’s a way people dress when you go and everyone speaks a similar way. I’d drink what the patrons were having and talk about spirits. It felt like my whole life was there. And then I just…stopped going. Now when I am exposed to anything that has the faintest whiff of that place I get the heebie-jeebies. What I see looking in from the outside of those memories scares me and I will never go back to church.

I feel the same. You don't realize your being brainwashed by a cult until you escape and see it all with new eyes.

This was very beautifully and cleverly written. Thank you.
I am wrestling with doing the same thing. So much harm done in the name of God. So much performance. So much conformity.
Christians are supposed to be known by their love yet what are they known for?
Lord have mercy

Um, yeah, that's a cult. Congrats on deprogramming yourself. Google, The BITE Model of Authoritarian Control. Christianity has: Undue Influence, Thought Reform, Brainwashing, and Mind Control. The different between a cult and a religion is about 200 years. When a cult becomes old enough, they're called a religion.

Can you believe the Roxy finally closed? It was the but of everyone's jokes, but somehow it stayed open for so many years. Only in Vancouver.

Thank goodness you posted this... so did I, lol! Happy I'm not the only one. Although, it's almost the same thing when you think about it.

Congratulations for seeing the truth. I grew up with a born again christian mother and to live in that environment was traumatic on many levels. I was told i would burn in hell if I didn't accept Christ as my saviour and was forced to go to church where the people there constantly pressured me to ask the lord into my heart and life as I was a sinner. I never bought into it and saw through the hypocrisies. I just can't believe what they believe. My mother is even more radical now than when I was young and it completely changed our relationship as she didn't convert until I was 10. I felt as if I lost my mother and she was replaced by some stranger. I have learned to deal with her as she's my only mother but we aren't close and I wonder what kind of relationship we would have had if she had never become religious.

Was the house band there in the early 90s. Boy when they'd start in with " it's fun to play (with yourself) at the YMCA" I'd start to get all goosey ...
