Homesick

My home flooded. About half of my building was affected. It's a concrete tower with all the bells and whistles, but small. It has been 8 months that I've been out, and it just keeps getting worse and worse. The tradespeople have not fixed it properly and have ruined many items that the flood didn't destroy just from carelessness. I've developed a mould allergy. I rent. I have 400k in the bank and can't even get a mortgage over 600k because I'm a single income borrower, even though my monthly income is 4k and a mortgage, strata and property taxes would still be less than my rent. I confess that I should have pushed my late husband to move before he died of cancer. We could have qualified for a better mortgage and I would have been better off now. Instead I'm stuck with a bunch of crap to deal with and can't find a decent place to move to. I've looked at several places for 499k or 535k and they are all either leaking, full of rats, or in buildings with police incidents regularly. I can't leave town beciase of work, and health issues, but man is it dismal. I wish that I knew someone who could go in to buy a 2 bedroom with me. I'm lonely and sick of dealing with all of this garbage. If I can't find a home, what chance do other people have? I'm homesick. I can't even live in my place due to the problems, so just pay the rent to keep my mail coming and still have an address. I have been staying elsewhere, troubleshooting, and hoping it can all be fixed soon. Hindsight is 20/20 but damn we should have bought that cute place for 475k a few years back. Fuuuuuu....

From the slumlording, to the half-assed repairs, to 500k+ for a rat-infested, leaky place to call home. OP, your post sums up the housing dystopia so well.
Hey CoV silver spoons: fucking regulate this shit already. Your greenest city is on a fast track to the nadir of hell.

You should be careful advertising looking for someone to live with or to share the rent with cause you might get weirdos like Jack Offing sending you messages. Buy an RV it's like a house on wheels, $50 thousand would get you a cute one and then you own it outright. Then you still have your other $ 350 thousand dollars plus a job to carry you.
Damn now that I think about it you really have nothing to whine about. You know there are lots of people far worse off than you in the world.
Happy Trails

Have you considered co-housing? Compass cohousing are a great bunch of folks in Langley that are looking for some more purchasers. Their 40 unit development will be breaking ground soon. AND they are having a free workshop next Thursday on co ownership. https://www.compasscohousing.com/news/co-ownership-and-co-living/

8 months seems like a long time to repair flood damage.

Ya that " cute " place will cost you about a million now ! Even the shit ones are a million.
Why ?
It's s not about the house anymore nice or shitty it's about the land, we are running out of land.
Buy an RV it's like a house on wheels and won't deplete your pocket book.
These days there are so many in the same boat as you

Surely if you make a reach-out via social media, community organizations or churches you should be able to find a compatible home share ownership. There are also property lawyers who specialize in home share conveyancing.

To that one anonymous. I'm lucky? Really? My wonderful husband is dead. Did you read that part? Dead! Terrible, slow, mind robbing death in the prime of his life. And I got to watch it all and I got to help him as best I could as it all went down. Don't ever call a grieving spouse lucky please. It makes you sound super weird. Also, yes some people have it worse. Also some people have it better. This is why it's not a good idea to hold up one person's life next to another's for comparison like an apple to an orange.
It's called "Fallacy of Relative Privation". Look it up. You could obviously benefit from educating yourself about the topic. If everyone were in a contest to see who has it the worst, wtf would that be like? It's not a competition!
Copy "Fallacy of Relative Privation" and paste into your google browser. It will help you in life to learn this logical fallacy.
To other anonymouses, thanks for the tips, but I wasn't asking for help, just confessing....I can't drive because I'm disabled so can't drive an RV around or commute from Langley to work and back. I appreciate the input though. :) I'd heard about the co-op and it seems cool.
And yes, 8 months is too long for a flood. So many delays with supply these chain issues. But hey, "some people have it worse", so I guess I have no right to make a confession. I wonder who does? First anonymous, who wins the "worst life" contest? Omfg seriously....
