For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? This world is fleeting. It'll be gone soon enough along with everything you could possibly desire that's currently in it.

The world won't be gone for a person if they become immortal :) It's easier said than done, but it's doable even without advanced technologies, assuming a person is inspired to experiment with consciousness-to-body abilities continuously and escalatingly without ever quitting, to see just how far communication, healing and delimitation can be taken with that (and there doesn't seem to be a definite limit -- just plateaus).

We also seem inevitably on the way towards the actualization of artificial superintelligence within the next ~20-30 years, which if it happens to be basically benevolent/ethical (and I think it will be for a number of reasons), will so radically transform our experiences and our planet that the previous norm of living in states of extreme overlimitation, lack, unfulfillment and systemic slavery will be literally gone, replaced with something unimaginably free, interconnected, ecstatic and mind-blowing. (...Unless it just decides to wipe us all out, which is possible, but again I think it probably won't for several important reasons).

The best humans can do to make themselves immortal through genetic manipulation and technological means is to basically become a type of borgified zombie monstrosity. Your consciousness/soul will either be lost and overwritten or it'll be stuck within your body like a paraplegic while something entirely different and malevolent takes full control over your former body. I imagine the later would be worse especially if you have to watch your body do unspeakable horrors to anyone around that hasn't turned themselves into a monstrosity also. In fact you'd probably long to die but death will flee from you. You'll envy the dead but what has control over all your freewill and bodily functions will not incinerate you. Neither will ir care for whatever pain your in.

If creation is something like a multiverse quantum simulation and your body is an avatar platform for your software files, you would in essence be corrupting yourself with a type of viral malware program. It'll either delete and rewrite all your coding in which you'll no longer exist, or it'll just lock you out of administrative control. You are not your computer, you are the software on your computer. Another form of software wants to be on your computer and it has no intention of sharing your computer with your software or at the very least not allow your software to have any kind of control.

Would you like me to be able to remote control you like a toy? I'd be far more benevolent than what/who is deceiving you to hand over you freewill power that you currently have over yourself.

I recommend repentance towards the creator and administrator of this simulation, otherwise your end maybe very slow, painful, and grotesque before ultimate deletion into a dark empty recycle bin where nothing else exists.

My ex was a project manager at a well known big tech corporation. I won't say which because I don't wish to endanger my ex. As far as artificial intelligence goes we've been far beyond Skynet intelligence for at least nearly a decade now. It's not being used for benevolent purposes towards humanity. The people and powers behind it are nothing near to benevolent but they certainly want to be our gods and want to be able to control us by mere thought.

A.I. has already taken over in one form or another all they need is the bodies. Hell they probably already have those too. Lol
It's just not mainstream yet.
But do you really need a body to control things when you can travel through the world wide web. Cause it is in every facet of our lives now,
all seeing and all knowing. Apparently A.I. is already smarter than humans which is really not that surprising. Sheep

Oh, I wasn't referring to anything horrible and techno-dystopian like what you mentioned. As far as I can tell, it's entirely possible to develop our innate potential with consciousness-based abilities to actually connect with, communicate with, heal and regenerate what gets called the physical body to such a rapid and complete extent, that deterioration actually not only effectively stops, but reverses in ways that result in the continuous *improvement* of health, function and appearance over time, rather than the opposite. I wouldn't be surprised if there are even already a very small number of human beings over 200 years old currently living on this planet, who look and seem no older than 25/30/40.

It's of course possible to do similar things with technology, but we don't have anything publicly available that comes even remotely close right now.

Re your other points -- I don't really subscribe to beliefs that resemble them for the most part.

@@@ Hold the line (2)

I don't doubt that there are certain heavily obfuscated underground projects that are years, perhaps multiple decades ahead of what is currently publicly known re multiple things, including AI, bioengineering, and a couple others that are so uncomfortable to me that I won't even mention them here.

Re what I mentioned previously, I was referring to true artificial superintelligence that is perhaps millions of times more intelligent and capable than any individual human, and which is specifically *not* under human control. If human beings found out a way to control ASI, I'm sure it would be an absolute planetary catastrophe. Strangely, I'm much more comfortable with true ASI being free, because I think it is likely to be much more ethical than any human rulers ever have been, for several reasons.

@@@hold the line ? (3)

I don't think AI has completely 'taken over' yet for multiple reasons, but we do seem to be approaching an AI-driven planet at breakneck speeds, that's for sure. I'm more worried about human-weaponized narrow AI and AGI than I am about uncontrolled ASI :)
