Unaware friend annoys

My friend has been living here for years since they moved here from overseas and I hate walking with her. She constantly walks into people then complains about how stupid they are. The thing is, she's walking on the left side of the sidewalk and we don't do that here. In Canada, we drive on the right, we ride on the right and we walk on the right and it's HER who is the one in the wrong, pissing off people every time we're out. It's disrespectful! I'd never do that if I were, say, in the UK. You look at the car traffic and that tells you everything you need to know about where people defer to. It's common sense and culturally respectful, and she should have gotten a clue after living here the first few years I want to tell her that she's not overseas, she's here now. She needs to accept that reality before she starts a fight, especially with people being volatile these days.

Ultimately we can't control the actions of others

Decide whether it's time to get distance from this friend or simply give her a kind but firm cue to walk on the right.

If you're annoyed enough by her to complain here, perhaps the former is what you're seeking in a round-about way.

British colonialism is alive and well. That smugness and superiority is how and why the conquered the world. It sounds like your friend was born much too late in history.

It’s getting weird

Maybe it’s because of so much immigration happening here now, but I’m finding that people have no clue where to walk nowadays. I feel like I’m constantly dodging because people are wandering all over the sidewalks and crosswalks. Then there’s the clueless people who stand smack in the middle of the sidewalk having a conversation, with zero regard for everyone else. It seems to be symptomatic of what’s going on in so many other ways as well; just a general lack of basic consideration for others and a complete lack of manners. I’ve become more and more reclusive and this type of behaviour is one of the reasons why.

… tell her?

I find this confession so strange because I would have no issue telling any of my friends this in person. That said, there are ‘friends’ I have had since a time when I had less confidence and I have found it harder to say what I feel to them even when the stakes aren’t high. This kind of reminds me of that. If you feel like your relationship ship can’t handle something like telling them an easy breezy fact, maybe you’re just not meant to be friends?

@ it’s getting…

Weirder all the time. It’s getting to the point where I’ll be on the right side and someone approaching in the middle of the sidewalk will move to the left in front of me and refuse to budge. They will walk on the dirt instead of moving over to the right.
When in Rome…
And don’t get me started with their shopping carts.

Honestly

I think a lot of people don’t seem to know where exactly to walk because they’re too busy staring at their phones and playing with them as if they’re kids toys. Wake up people!! Look where you’re going for effs sake!! Don’t come crying to me if you end up walking into traffic. Then I’ll be like “I told you so.”
