You are not black just cuz you love hip hop

It’s very sad and funny to see how many, mostly Asian people, think they are experts in black culture. I get it, you love hip hop and your worship Beyonce. Thats all good. But dont talk to me about black issues like you one of us. Girl you grew up in Richmond drinking bubble tea. Stop fronting like you know. Also its mad creepy how the above people be fetishizing black people. We are not your trophy or status symbol you Kardashian wannabe.

You've got a point about superficial wannabes. Especially in regards to G Bwoy or G Girly Whirly mentality. BUT it ain't about Black or White. It's about Wrong or Right.

Interesting post. Having lived in Asia, and being a white guy with blue eyes, I know how it feels to be an accessory, but it was a two-way street if you know what I mean? It wasn't without its perks.

I've seen a lot of Asian hip hop/ rap poseurs over the years, busting out moves and reciting gangster lyrics, but is it any less stupid when white people do it? The market for hip hop/rap is largely the middle class. Upper-class white and Asian culture kinda sucks. Emotional/sexual repression, oppressive parents, pressure to conform socially, very few surprises or struggles to overcome in life. The stories that you hear in certain sub-genres of rap music provide a viable context for a fantasy life that can sustain white and Asian people through the doldrums of affluence. The marketing industry knows this and will continue to market that music to them. It's money in the bank.

Whatcha talkin bout Willis? I wouldn't think it was sad nor funny to watch an Asian person enjoy country and western music, dress the part, and know everything about Garth Brooks. But there you go getting upset because someone knows more about Beyonce than you do. Just chill out and have a good time together. Afterall, it's not a pissing contest.

As an Irish person

I find the downvotes hilarious. You're mad because a person of colour is calling you out for cultural appropriation?

Exactly! The Irish have been crapped on by countless other races for ages and you don’t hear us whining about cultural appropriation and oppression here in North America. Don’t even get me started about the asinine antics of a bunch of drunk people on St Patrick’s Day. Honestly I think it’s time everyone just stops all this bs and comes to grips with the concept that the world is a lot smaller now that everyone’s connected via the internet. So appreciating and enjoying music or styles from another culture is perfectly normal. Get the f*** over it.
