Many gov employees are passive aggresive toxic people because you can't easily quit or change jobs so if co worker is just toxic your hard pressed to grit your teeth and put up smiley face or you risk of losing steady paycheck and pension. This toxicity in how people behave increases as one age and more money is at stake. I did not get memo from career councelor

Working for the government is the iron trough, they can act like smug, entitled dicks because it's so hard for them to get fired and down deep, they know their mediocrity, and they project it on the people they serve.
You work for the government?

And you write and think that poorly???
We are fucking doomed.
But if you *can* make it to the finish line

An index-linked, defined-benefit pension basically means you can be absolutely terrible with money - living pay cheque to pay cheque your whole life - and still come out ahead of anyone who gets paid more than you and lives a frugal life in order to save as much as they can.
If you are reading this and are at a point in your life where you are trying to decide what career to go into, pick a government job. I cannot stress this enough. Yes, it is boring and you will have to put up with a lot of annoyingly stupid co-workers but the pay is decent, the amount of vacation is rivalled only by European workers, the job security is way more than you will find in the private sector, and the pension means you will never, ever have to worry about money. You won't be in a position to collect million dollar sports cars but you'll never have to decide between rent or groceries.
and then

you bring all that poison home to the family table. Mediocrity is statistically inevitable, government requires a lot of tedious creeps.
