Self Checkout Machines
posted May 31st, 2023 at 1:32 PM
I confess that these stupid self checkout machines at stores are a waste of time. People get sucked into thinking they're saving time but they aren't. They're actually keeping people out of work by using them. The stores are making massive profits off our backs including the additional fact we have to bag our own goods. I was at a store today and this poor woman was having difficulty with a machine and the lone cashier had to go over and help her twice with it while the line behind me grew longer. The woman complained out loud about the machine not working and it always seems to happen so I asked her why is she using it? She's putting people out of work by not going to the cashier who is alone because the store under staffs and forces people to go to the machines. I see the self checkouts take far more time than a cashier. Of course every idiot in line behind me ends up going to the self checkout while the lone cashier fends for themself. Garbage. Stand your ground people and boycott this crap by using a real cashier!! And some of you may wonder where the jobs are going.

There are Lots of introverts who are thankful for those self-checkouts.
Don't worry about the self-checkout thing

That wonderful MuskBot humanitarian guy is now starting to put micro chips into people. So there will soon be no need for any checkouts at all. Big benevolent Brother MuskBot will take care of everything for us .... OUCH !!!!

You are wrong.
My Superstore put in maybe 40 of them, and I have yet to stand in a line up. Unlike the old days, where I'd go by SS and go back home as the lineups for the 8 slow and bored cashiers were easily 100 people long.
Yeah some people lost their jobs, but are lots of other ones out there
Hell yes

I hate them too. What I also hate is the attitude from so many stores now that somehow we’re supposed to be grateful for any little crumbs of service we get from them. There’s a smarmy little shit at a local store I go to frequently who acts like he’s above it all. Like he’s so superior and special that he shouldn’t have to do anything. He obviously hates his job and it really shows. He’s ridiculously sarcastic and gives these little snide half-smiles. I feel like smacking his stupid little curly moustache off his face every time I have the misfortune to have to deal with him. We’re all being conditioned to accept less and less from every business. Less service in stores, less money in our pockets, higher costs for everything, you name it. We’re nothing but the cogs in the machine.
Yes!

I paid for my first year of university working as a cashier in the early 2000s. It was the only job I could get where I didn't have to flirt with men for tips or stay up until 2am working some nightlife job, and I got 30% off of my groceries. There was no way I could have paid for school AND food otherwise. That job gave me the experience to later get better paying jobs on campus and I even got a scholarship from the company. I will never use those disgusting machines. They're also gross and never get cleaned. They're full of everyone's random and disgusting oily fingerprints. No thanks! I'll be sticking to my cashier people! It makes me so sad to see the one staff running frantically from machine to machine in a panic. Nope nope nope.

It's a lost fight, my friend, AI, and automation/robotics, is here to stay, and you can't change the course we're on.
Historically, the job market changed slowly to suit any new technological advancements, and a new type of job could be created, but things are changing so fast, a lot of people will be out of work before the job market can evolve. So you better start asking our politicians about a Universal Basic Income policy, because things will get worse before they get better.

same reason that goods have tripled in price over the last three years, damn self checkouts.
And where is the discount?

Agreed. And if we are forced to use a self-serve, there should be a discount. We are doing a job that the retailer should have been paying an employee for. Free labour.

I have 3 or 4 items I’m out of there in 5 min. I don’t want to wait in a long line up for that. You have a cashier on the self check that would be the same as if she’s at the till. No one is losing their jobs. BUT people should have a choice. Walmart isn’t fair for that.
