Baby fandom

I was asked to download an app to follow someone’s baby, after receiving an impersonal group email about the newborn. The sender has never followed me on any social media, yet was asking apparently a bunch of people to follow her baby boy. I decided not to as I felt like I was expected to join this impersonal fan club. I just don’t have it in me to give kudos endlessly for baby stuff right now. If you want to connect your baby with me, I’ll gladly hang out in person. But I’m not gonna follow your baby and idolize it like it’s some kind of celebrity. The ask is too much.

I'd be annoyed by that too.

On the one hand, I see how the parent(s) might be attempting to save time during a stressful period by making use of an online convenience tool.

On the other hand, it feels like such a weird, intimate space to be invited into, where the child is a nucleus to be revolved around.

Also, aren't the parents concerned about baby photos being shared inappropriately by randos?

I've never considered that could be a thing, how horrible. There is an element of narcissism in parenting, and those parents never consider how it will affect their children. Good for you, don't participate in it.

Yes, I guess the parents are thinking they could save time by “broadcasting” their baby. But I could equally save time by not participating. The whole arrangement feels just completely one-sided. I’m expected to observe and comment on every move the baby makes, yet this couple doesn’t follow anything about me, not even text or email or call me.

This is just insane. I agree with your decision OP, 100%. These parents need to spend less time "apping", and more time just enjoying being new parents.

What a bizarre time we live in. It’s bad enough when new parents want to deluge everyone with nonstop talking about their child or bombarding people with photos, but expecting you to “follow” the kid? That’s insanity and I’d just ignore it too. If that baby was actually posting their own content, now that would be worth following lol.
