Lost little brother

My brother and I used to be really close growing up. He got married and then went through a nasty divorce. That changed him. His mood deteriorated, he disengaged from family, started to abuse substances. I've tried to get him help, be supportive, offer olive branches and everything is met with silence or disinterest. I love him and I mourn the relationship that we could have had. But I realize that I'm not responsible for his happiness and that he's the only one that can implement change.

Sad but true

So many families suffering the same disintegration these DayZ. I will always love my lost ones and help anyway I can but ultimately you can't help anyone who doesn't want to help themselves. Its very painful for me at times but i find comfort in the teachings of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross about the stages of grief. Her teachings are mainly about grieving the death of love ones, but they can also be applied to family estrangements.

You can let him know that you are there for him.

Right now he doesn't want to know, but that's because he is in fundamental pain and doesn't want to hear anyone's opinions etc. Eventually he might come around.

Try to be patient.

And be patient and non judgmental…tough love has no place here. Love and compassion are key
