go love your own city

i wish vancouver would go back to how it was when i was growing up. i'm 35. i liked living on the westside. it's too expensive now. kits beach used to be empty on a satuday in july. it was nice. now it's full of douches, and the culture is more transient than anything, lots of people from australia or just arrived from out east. ick. there were lots of small stores in cute old buildings on 4th and on robson. it was nice. now it's just the same old crap that can be found in any generic mall or cruise ship port. people were mellow, cleaned up after themselves, and would congregate on the beaches at night during the summer, and were free to have a fire and drink a beer. there was some freedom. now, the love is gone, rules abound. complainers run everything. we have to compete with the entire world to buy a house. everyone wants to come here, but what about the people who lived here before? pushed aside, a humble cuture, overrun. who cares about the money! let's stop whoring our city out to the world. i propose limits on foreign property ownership. if your not canadian, you can't buy land in vancouver. good ruloe i think. we wouldn't be the first place to do it, and for the same reasons..good reasons.

"pushed aside, a humble cuture, overrun."

Unfortunately, that is what happens to humble cultures. City of Vancouver's immunosuppressed, and we're told to like it because if you don't like immunosuppressive propaganda, you're racist!

Pop quiz: What is it called when a host organism is invaded by foreign bodies? What is the _proper_ response for a body under such invasion? Your white blood cells, they're so layceez, trying to prevent foreign cultures from setting up shop!

"Now you know how the Native nations feel, eh?"

Except that the native nations lacked the martial capacity to oppose the wave of industrialism. Modern Vancouver and Modern British Columbia do not lack the munitions and martial capacity to keep Vancouver and to keep British Columbia for Vancouverites and British Columbians. All we lack is political will, inspired in large part by compromising propaganda delivered via the K-University system. The educators within that system are complicit in this Corporate Takeover.

A decent summary is provided in http://www.amazon.com/Revolt-Elites-Betrayal-Democracy/dp/0393313719 - Revolt of the Elites and the Betrayal of Democracy.

If any of you have family who served in WWI and WWII, is this what they died for, to see their homeland (won by conquest or otherwise) sold off to Chinese Communists and whoever else can graft enough fiat $$$$? Did they serve so that the horror visited upon the native nations could be visited upon their own great grandchildren?

Meritocracy, the focus of the above-mentioned book, might as well be called "soft eugenics," eugenics for those who lack the stomach to actually kill their useless eaters---after all, a useless eater can generate lots of work for doctors, nurses, etc. etc. So compassionate, these meritocrats who use the local disabled population to finance themselves, all the while selling the resources off to the highest foreign bidders.

Couldn't agree more! I'm the same age as you and have lived in North Burnaby my whole life. The demographic shifts here are frustrating to say the least. Home ownership is a pipe dream for most of us in this market and it makes my blood boil that I'll probably rent forever if I want to stay in my hometown.

Wake Up Vancouver

Jul 29, 2011 at 9:09pm

last time I looked this was still Canada...(though I see vancouver quickly becoming its own..)
Though its seems Vancouver is more and more structuring to Asian culture in how we live
(small crapped quarters, compacting thousands of people together, poor quality food, condos so small that would NEVER be allowed in other parts of Canada...(it doesn't work in Asian..yet we adapt it here).
and not to mention..
Unofficial canadian languages
(since when is speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese mandatory in Canada??..
I guess we can demand that ENGLISH become the official language of Hong Kong and see if that ever happens)
What happened to ENGLISH?
ahhhhhhhhh, what ever happened to when in Rome??..
Only in Canada ??
..well, ONLY in VANCOUVER.
better wake up Vancouver....Change is NOT always for the better.

Standing water wtvr wtvr-- I hope u realize ur ranting comments make little sense. They never do..

As to our city being 'overrun by asian culture'...I hope y'all realize cramped living space and such is not unique to chinese ppl. That's what happens with anyone who has experienced life in overpopulated countries. And as someone who spent a few years in taiwan, english has been regularly taught for at least a decade. Its because america was the biggest economic power so learning english made sense. Now china is taking that role. Knowing chinese is going to be an advantage.

And no one complains about compulsory french?

Demographics change, cultures mix, people invade other people. This has been going on since the beginning of civilization and there have always been people complaining about what how good it was "back in the old days".

Stop taking yourself to be the standard of what is 'right', Mr. I dont care. You're insignificant and small in terms of Canadian and global history. Future Canadians--perhaps ppl who were born and raised here, but may be multilingual like me--won't care that you speak english. We won't care that you think english is the only important language.
