Why?!

I have been taking transit now for a few years in Vancouver. Please tell me why people sit in the outside seat on a crowded train or bus and look at me if I'm an alien when I want to sit in the EMPTY seat by the window? Why do people do this? Very laid back person, but this makes me crazy!!!!

Also extremely annoying: people who stand in front of the rear exit doors even when there are available seats (let alone other places to stand) and are in the way when you're trying to disembark; people who don't remove their backpacks or other large baggage on crowded buses; and younger people who don't give up the front seats to elderly people. And by the latter, yes I'm talking to YOU, the hipster asshole with glasses in his mid-20s who gets on at 14th/Granville, nabs the first available seat & keeps his head down when older people get on.

Fear. People fear being close to strangers. Fear.

People in Vancouver are afraid of each other!!!!!! Normal every day people! For no reason at all! Sometime the only people who reach out are the homeless and charity canvassers but that's only because they want something from you. I know what you mean O.P. Totally.

Lots of different cultures with different outlooks on what's rude , might as well just accept it and be happy

possible reasons 1) claustrophobia 2) fear they will have to squeeze by someone on their way out 3) they are getting off the bus soon 4) strange 5) inconsiderate. i'm sure there are more but....

I have noticed this is a common practice for people who are obviously new to Canada and for them it's probably about fearing strangers and feeling intimidated.
I don't mind when elderly folks do it because it's just physically easier for them to take the outside seat.
Other people are just passive aggressive asshats. What pisses me off more is when other passengers let them get away with it on a crowded bus or train. They're just as pathetic as the asshats.

I think these people are selfish. Unfortunately for them I usually make a bee-line for the seat they are 'guarding', and if they protest, I ask, in a loud voice, "Oh, did you purchase TWO tickets?"

I think they are just rude and don't want anyone to sit beside them. I did ask a male to let me in and he was extremely angry and rude to me. I am a senior and most all of the time that the bus is crowded, no one will stand up for me or for handicapped people, or ones with small children. I feel very sad for how rude and thoughless many people have become.
