Fall might be in the air but that doesn’t mean we’re ready to let go of our sunshine vibes just yet. And to celebrate, Wesgroup is bringing back its fifth-annual River District drive-in movie festival with a rewind of the season’s best Hollywood blockbusters, along with a few old-school classics.
Every Saturday, starting on September 15 until October 27, the River District neighbourhood will show double-feature hit films on an epic four-storey screen. The drive-in lot is located at Boundary at Marine Way, half a block south from Marine Way, so don’t miss your chance to load up the car and enjoy a fun, retro evening under the stars.
The best part? Each movie is completely free to attend! All you have to do is register your spot on the website. Your carload pass gives you preferred parking for the screening of your choice, for an unreserved parking stall for one car, truck, van, or SUV, plus entry for you and up to seven other guests inside your vehicle.
Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and viewers are encouraged to come early to ensure they get the best space. There will be food trucks and other snacks on site each night, so come hungry—especially since Scotiabank will be handing out free popcorn at the start of each show.
The film’s soundtrack is broadcast through your radio so make sure you have an FM radio—or that you bring a portable one with you. Then all that’s left for you to do is sit back and enjoy the ride! Thinking of walking in? Bring your lawn chair and you’ll have seats right up at the front—speakers too!
Kicking off the festival on Saturday (September 15) is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the latest in the movie series, followed by the 1993 original Jurassic Park. Attendees can also enjoy free screenings of Ant-Man and the Wasp and Solo: A Star Wars Story on September 22, or Incredibles 2 and Deadpool 2 on September 29.
On October 13, you can set your inner dancing queen free with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the hotly anticipated sequel starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Lily James, and Cher—all performed to the music of ABBA. And then stay for the time of your life with the showing of everyone’s favourite love story, Dirty Dancing, starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey.
Be sure to follow the website for updates on the final screenings. Although free, organizers encourage people to bring donations, which will be collected at the box office. All proceeds will go to the South Vancouver Family Place.
And to sweeten the deal Wesgroup is also giving one lucky winner the chance to win a River District prize pack valued at $100, below. Don’t forget to register your spot at the movie festival! A winner will be drawn on October 5. The beautiful community in South Vancouver offers something for everyone with 250,000 square feet of shops, eateries, and everyday services. For Vancouverites who haven’t been there before, the area formerly known as East Fraserlands, has been completely transformed over the past 10 years. The 130-acre site on the Fraser River offers ample opportunities to explore the shoreline with bike paths and public green space, in addition to a vibrant Town Centre public plaza. And events like the River District drive-in movie festival help bring the community together.
River District Prize Pack (value of $100) for River District retailers including:
