If there is one thing that is synonymous with Vancouver in summer, it surely has to be beer. And the last Friday in May marks one of the most important dates in every beer lover’s calendar. Yes, Vancouver Craft Beer Week (VCBW) is back on May 25 with an exciting 10-day lineup, culminating at the historic PNE Fairgrounds on June 2 and 3.
Now entering its ninth successful year, the citywide celebration has become one of the most anticipated events in Western Canada showcasing music, food, art, and, of course, craft beer.
But even for the most seasoned attendees, this year promises a few surprises—starting with the VCBW Kickoff: East Van Crusher on Friday (May 25). The opening party—hailed as the event that officially kicks off the summer—will take place at Maritime Labour Centre (1880 Triumph Street), located in the heart of one of the city’s biggest brewery districts.
For the first year ever, revellers at the launch party can enjoy cans from more than 20 breweries to the spectacle of Copper & Theory’s Feats of Strength—a battle of brewers, cellar people, barkeeps, and plain ol’ strong folk, in push-up competitions, keg stacking, and so much more. Tickets include entry and two beers for $25 and can be purchased now.
In what’s set to be a truly citywide celebration of the craft beer community, VCBW-approved restaurants and breweries across Vancouver will also be joining the festivities from May 25 to June 3.
In addition to a few annual favourites, imbibers can enjoy an exciting lineup of events for the duration of the festival. Highlights include: Forbidden Fruit presented by The Devil’s Elbow, featuring fruity and sour beers from 22 B.C. craft breweries; East Van Comes to the West End Tap Takeover at Timber; Vancouver Brewery Tour’s Gastown Pub Walk; and Craft Beer Market’s Brewmaster Dinner, featuring the breweries of Port Moody’s Brewers Row.
The celebration will end on a high with the VCBW festival taking place at the PNE Fairgrounds on June 2 and 3. And this year, is set to be the best yet. Attendees will have access to more than 100 breweries and cideries with over 300 different beers and ciders being poured—including a selection from across the border, in partnership with the United States Brewers Association.
There will also be food trucks, live art, games, and a craft beer lounge—in addition to a music lineup featuring DJ Hebegebe, Dakota Pearl, and Youngblood, to name but a few.
Sounds like the perfect way to kick off the summer. Cheers!
