Watching holiday-themed movies for the entirety of November and December can really take its toll on parents. There is no denying that staying in to view Elf for the 98th time makes for a classic family night, but an evening out can be far more memorable.
This year, give onesie pajamas and Christmas movies a break. Instead, spend an evening at the annual Theatre Replacement’s East Van Panto.
This year’s Panto puts an exciting twist on the children’s classic, Pinocchio—featuring characters who all call Vancouver home. Suitable for children ages five and up, the entertaining and energetic show is sure to become a family tradition.
The original supporting characters of Pinocchio receive a trendy update for the pantomime show. Geppetto is now “Gelato”, a lonely old ice-cream vendor who receives a puppet from the mysterious “Beckwoman” of Commercial Drive.
But fear not diehard Disney fans, as Pinocchio will still have his friendly half-cricket sidekick as they encounter an angry orca and a devious fox during their adventure. Along the way, Pinocchio finds himself in the midst of a frothy cappuccino war and at the Hastings Racecourse.
The outstanding creative team behind last year’s hit production of the Wizard of Oz has returned to give new life to the story of the puppet with a growing nose. Playwright Marcus Youssef, composer Veda Hille, and director Stephen Drover fill the theatrical performance with witty dialogue, talented acting, and memorable music.
Youssef found inspiration within Commercial Drive’s Italian heritage to give the story a hyper-local spin, which is sure to captivate all of those who will watch. The East Van Panto team continues to push artistic boundaries and take creative risks to bring enjoyment to the community.
The show will be running at the York Theatre (639 Commercial Drive) from November 20, 2019 to January 5, 2020. Both afternoon and evening performances are offered to accommodate nap times and hectic holiday schedules.
Tickets are just $26 for children less than 16 years of age, with family packs available from $160. Family packs include tickets for two adults and two children.
