COVID-19 in B.C.: Cases continue to decrease; no new cases in Island Health; Fraser Health beach clinics; and more

      Case numbers continue to decrease in all categories. In addition, Island Health reported no new cases over two consecutive days.

      Over one-third of adults in B.C. have now received their second vaccine dose.

      Yet despite the progress made, deaths continue to occur in B.C.

      Meanwhile, Fraser Health is continuing to provide convenient new ways to obtain vaccinations. Next week, it will hold vaccination clinics at beaches (aimed at reaching youth and families) for anyone 12 years and older:

      • Crescent Beach (12160 Beecher Street) in South Surrey from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday (July 6);
      • Main Beach at Cultus Lake from 10 am to 4 p.m. on Friday (July 9).

      Anyone who still needs their first dose can do so as a drop-in at any Fraser Health immunization clinic.

      B.C. update: July 1 to 2

      According to a joint statement from B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix, there were 84 cases over the last two days, including:

      • 49 new cases from June 30 to July 1;
      • 35 new cases from July 1 to 2.

      By regional health authority, the total includes:

      • 36 new cases in Fraser Health;
      • 25 in Interior Health;
      • 21 in Vancouver Coastal Health;
      • two in Northern Health;
      • none in Island Health;
      • no one from outside of Canada.

      A decrease of 87 cases since June 30 leaves B.C. with 729 active cases.

      Currently, 99 individuals are in hospitals (nine fewer than June 30), and 30 of those are in intensive care units (four fewer since June 30).

      Over the past two days, there have been two new COVID-19-related deaths, which brings the total fatalities to 1,756 people who have died during the pandemic.

      A total of 145,200 people (98 percent) have now recovered, which includes 102 recoveries since June 30.

      During the pandemic, B.C. has recorded a cumulative total of 147,705 cases, which includes:

      • 85,841 cases in Fraser Health (58 percent);
      • 35,515 in Vancouver Coastal Health (24 percent);
      • 13,179 in Interior Health (nine percent);
      • 7,801 in Northern Health (five percent);
      • 5,160 in Island Health (three percent);
      • 209 people from outside of Canada (less than one percent).

      In B.C’s immunization program, 78.7 percent of all adults and 77.5 percent of those 12 and above have received their first vaccine dose.

      Meanwhile, 35.2 percent of all adults in B.C. and 32.9 percent of those 12 and older have received their second dose.

      A total of 5,124,693 doses of Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca vaccines have been administered in B.C., and 1,526,711 of those have been second doses.

      Outbreaks and exposures

      Today, Fraser Health declared the outbreak over at Glenwood Care Centre in Agassiz.

      Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) also lifted restrictions at Minoru Residence in Richmond and Hollyburn House Care Centre in West Vancouver today (restrictions were imposed on June 21 at both locations). (VCH has not yet announced that the outbreaks at these facilities have been declared over.)

      Currently, there are seven active healthcare outbreaks listed in the joint statement from Henry and Dix: four outbreaks in longterm care facilities and three in acute care facilities.

      The B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) added the following flights to its public exposure lists (affected row information is listed at the BCCDC website when available):

      • June 18: Air Canada 129, Toronto to Vancouver;
      • June 25: Aeromexico 696, Mexico City to Vancouver;
      • June 28: Air Canada 376, Victoria to Montreal;
      • June 28: All Nippon Airways 116, Tokyo to Vancouver.

      Loblaw announced that it will no longer be listing COVID-19 cases at its stores, due to overall declining cases in Canada and reduced risk to staff and customers.

      T&T Supermarket, which has not reported any new cases for a few weeks, stated that as cases at its store have becoming increasingly rare and 92 percent of its staff are now vaccinated, the risk at its stores are not greater than any other businesses.

      McDonald’s has not reported any new cases in the past 14 days, and the last case Sobeys reported was on June 25.
