The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over.

That's evident in the latest statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix, who reported 12 new deaths over the past three days.

That brings B.C.'s COVID-19 fatality count to 1,679.

The number of active cases, however, has fallen significantly. It now stands at 3,953. That's down from 4,507 on Friday (May 21), a drop of more than 12 percent.

There were 292 people in hospital with COVID-19, down from 319 on Friday. As well, the number of people in intensive care has fallen from 107 to 96 over three days.

From May 21 to 22, there were 356 new cases, followed by 325 from May 22 to 23, and 293 in the last 24 hours.

“This results in 974 new cases over the period, for a total of 142,347 cases in British Columbia," Henry and Dix said.

The largest number of new cases, 630, was in Fraser Health, followed by 157 in Vancouver Coastal. There were 117 in Interior Health, 44 in Northern Health, and 25 in Island Health.

According to the statement, 2,885,488 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C. to adults 18 and over. Of those, 147,444 are second doses.

On Tuesday (May 25), the B.C. government is expected to announce its restart plan for the economy.

"Until tomorrow’s announcement, there are no changes for individuals or businesses," Henry and Dix said.
