Three people have died and dozens of staff and residents have been infected at a Burnaby long-term care home as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak.

There have been 90 cases so far at the Willingdon Care Centre at 4435 Grange Street, including 69 residents and 21 staff members.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said at an October 14 briefing that the number of deaths is expected to increase to 10.

“I think you’ll also see an increase in the number of people who’ve passed away reported over the next number of periods related to the Willingdon care home,” Dix said.

Willingdon Care Centre is one of 19 active outbreaks in health-care facilities.

This comes in the wake of questions being raised by CARP (formerly the Canadian Association of Retired Persons) and others about why B.C. has not proceeded more quickly with third vaccinations for seniors and other vulnerable people.
