B.C.-based Ashton College takes pride in putting adult learners on new career paths with the proper Canadian credentials.
And it structures its programs so that even those with family responsibilities have options to study part-time so that they don't have to quit their day jobs.
Flexible and convenient—it's education that's ideally suited for the times.
Two examples are its new unit clerk course and its education assistant program.
In addition, Ashton College's short and snappy continuing education courses also offer an opportunity for those in the workforce to upgrade their skills.
"Realizing how challenging it may be for newcomers to achieve their career goals, we take efforts to facilitate their entry to the job market and encourage them to learn and develop their knowledge and skills to become successful," Ashton College president Colin Fortes says on the school's website.
Unit Clerk Certificate (live online)
Have you ever wanted to work in a health-care setting? Or imagined enrolling in a nursing unit clerk program?
Full-time students can complete the new 468-hour unit clerk course in less than six months. Those who prefer to study part-time will obtain their certificate in less than a year.
According to Ashton College's digital marketing manager, Richa Dev, graduates can find work as a nursing unit clerk, hospital clerk, ward clerk, or health unit clerk.
"There are a lot of job opportunities for unit clerks," Dev said.
She explained that those who complete the unit clerk course will be able to communicate professionally with patients.
In addition, they're trained to perform role-specific tasks adapted to different practice sessions.
Moreover, they'll understand medical terminology and basic pharmacology, such as the names of the most common drugs in both their generic and trade names. And grads will know how to recall and manage patient information and appointments.
"There will be a complete practicum in a real-world setting," Dev noted. "These practicums can be anywhere—in clinics or rehab centres or in hospitals."
Education Assistant Diploma Program (live online)
Like Ashton College's unit clerk program, the education assistant course also includes a practicum component.
Dev pointed out that said this education assistant course—also known as a teaching assistant course—will qualify graduates to work in public schools.
The program involves 720 hours of live online instruction, which can be completed in less than a year on a full-time basis, including the practicum.
Those who study part-time will be finished in just over 19 months.
"Practicums will be arranged by us," Dev said.
Continuing Education Courses
At Ashton College, students can enroll in Red Seal exam prep courses, a certified financial planner course, and the Canadian Securities Course, among other offerings.
Those with an interest in housing can take home inspection courses.
Some continuing education courses are ideally suited to people who may have moved to Canada and want to upgrade their knowledge in specific areas in short courses.
"We'll keep on adding more courses to this division, for each and every domain," Dev said.
