There’s no shortage of options for good bites on Granville Island, but food-lovers should keep an eye out for a soon-to-open eatery in the tourist hot spot.

Popina Canteen is gearing up for a summer debut on the northwest side of the public market. Described as a “gourmet counter-service restaurant”, the new culinary concept will be situated in repurposed shipping containers.

It’s the brainchild of four top Vancouver chefs: Angus An (Maenam, Fat Mao, Sen Pad Thai), Robert Belcham (Campagnolo, Monarch Burger), Hamid Salimian (culinary consultant for Earls, instructor at Vancouver Community College’s culinary arts program), and Joël Watanabe (Kissa Tanto, Bao Bei).

“We have been playing with the idea of a collaboration project for years,” said Angus An, co-founder of Popina Canteen, in a press-statement. “Popina Canteen is a project that distils our years of fine dining experience into something that is casual and fun. To be able to share and launch this concept on Granville Island, an iconic Vancouver landmark, is a dream come true”.

The main kitchen and takeaway counters will be housed in the containers, while a designated outdoor seating area that offers great views of False Creek will be reserved for customers.

The opening of this restaurant is part of the initiatives for Granville Island 2040: Bridging Past and Future—a detailed plan to expand and transform the market.

“We are thrilled to welcome Popina Canteen to Granville Island. This innovative concept is the ideal way to move forward with our vision for an expanded market district on the island,” said Lisa Ono, manager of public Affairs & programming for Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation-Granville Island. “During our recent Granville Island 2040 public consultation and planning process, there was strong demand from both locals and visitors for more varied and creative food offerings on the island”.

We’re sure that that Popina’s menu will consist of tasty dishes that will draw from each of the chef-owner’s own culinary style and culture.

Stay tuned for more information on the highly anticipated food establishment.
