Off the Rail steps up for SOTW's John Mann with Spirit Lifter pilsner

If the Vancouver music scene is famous for anything, it’s for a spirit of solidarity.

Maybe it has something to do with being isolated on the West Coast, or being traditionally considered something of a backwater.

Whatever the reason, Vancouver is a city where those involved in the music scene tend to form tight bonds, and then go to above-and-beyond lengths to support each other. That’s admirable in an industry famous for its backbiting, sleaziness, and general subhumanry.

Off the Rail Brewing rolling out a new beer called Spirit Lifter should, therefore, surprise no one.

More than a beer, the new pilsner is a fundraiser for Spirit of the West singer and Vancouver icon John Mann.

      John Mann.

In 2014, after three decades of fronting one of the city’s most enduring acts, Mann was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers at age 51. SOTW played a series of farewell concerts at the Commodore in 2015. Since than Mann has been focussed on managing the disease at home.

Proceeds from Spirit Lifter will go to Mann, who has a close relationship with Off the Rail founder Steve Forsythe. For decades Forsythe’s family—including his sister Janet—owned and operated the Railway Club. One of the country’s most iconic venues, the Dunsmuir bar hosted every local band that ever mattered during the Forsythes’ tenure, as well as future stars like k.d. lang and the Barenaked Ladies.

Spirit of the West played the Railway countless times during its career, with Steve Forsythe’s sister Janet going on to manage the band.

Spirit Lifter was conceived as a way to give back to Mann and his family. Proceeds from the limited edition beer will go towards his care and treatment as he continues to battle the disease.

Spirit Lifter pilsner will be rolled out at BC liquor stores and licensed retail locations throughout the province June 15 to September 1.
