The number of South Asian restaurants in the West End is slowly increasing, and some new places are on the horizon.

Among them is Mumbai Local, which is planning to open at 1148 Davie Street (in the former location of the Daily Catch Seafood) in the Davie Village. The menu is set to focus on street-food inspired eats.

For snacking, there are four puri (flat or hollow crackers) options ($7 each): bhel (mango, mint chutney, tamarind, and more), pani (mashed white peas), shev (potato, mango, cilantro, chutney, noodles, and more), and dahi (potato, shev, tamarind chili chutney, yogurt, cilantro).

Street eats (from $7 to $14) will run the gamut from masala toast sandwich (spiced potato mash, tomato, onion, beetroot, and cucumber on toast) or vada pav (spiced potato ball with sweet chili chutney in a bun) to seekh kebab (minced goat) or prawns rava (semolina batter-fried prawns).

Dinner plates (from $14 to $20) include dal khichadi (yellow lentils cooked with rice, turmeric, cumin, and ghee), fish aamti (sablefish cooked with coconut, kokum, and more) with a rice pancake, and other dishes with goat, chicken, or crab.

There are a few Indo-Chinese fusion items sprinkled throughout the menu such as Manchurian chicken, chicken lollipops with Szechuan chutney and cabbage slaw, or egg Hakka noodles.

The Georgia Straight is awaiting a response to an inquiry for more information, including confirmation of an opening date.

Meanwhile, another Indian street-food eatery, Horn OK Please, is preparing to open its first of three Metro Vancouver locations down at English Bay.
