8 colourful treats to eat for Pride Vancouver 2018

    1 of 9 2 of 9

It’s almost peak Pride Vancouver season, so it’s no surprise that shops and businesses around town are gearing up for the festivities this year.

Plenty of bakeries and food establishments in the city are joining in on the fun, creating rainbow-coloured sweets for the LGBT celebrations.

Besides being photo-worthy, these vibrant treats are also deeply satisfying—think sugar buns filled with whipped frosting, and classic cinnamon buns with a rainbow hue.

Here are eight colourful desserts to get your hands on in the lead-up to the Vancouver Pride parade (August 5).

      1. Blueberry Cheesecake Cake Bars

We don’t know about you, but this combo sounds amazing—you really can’t go wrong with a dessert that pairs cheesecake and cake together. The blueberries are a nod to the summer’s sweet harvest, which are mouth-watering in their own right. Intricately drizzled in rainbow icing, these babies are available through August 5. Find them at giovane café + eatery + market at the Fairmont Pacific Rim (1038 Canada Place).

      The Pie Hole

      2. Lemon MeringueGay Pie

Who said pies can’t be colourful? This lemon meringue pie features a tasty lemon curd filling encompassed in a double-butter crust, topped with a fluffy rainbow Italian meringue. We’ll let you decide if this treat should be shared amongst others, or fully eaten by yourself. They are available for pre-order online or on a first-come, first-serve basis in store from August 1 to 6. Find them at the Pie Hole (3487 Fraser Street and 7832 6th Street, Burnaby).

      3. Love Buns

These fluffy and colourful balls of joy are the limited-edition counterpart to the classic sugar buns. Aptly named “Love Buns” for the Vancouver Pride season, these multi-coloured sugar-dusted pastries are stuffed with a rainbow cream filling and available through August 5. Pro-tip: slice the bun in half with a very sharp knife for an Instagram-worthy shot. Find them at giovane café + eatery + market at the Fairmont Pacific Rim (1038 Canada Place).

      A Loving Spoonful

      4. PRIDE-a-licious Doughnuts

This annual treat is making a comeback, and we’re not complaining. These Pride-themed yeast doughnuts from Cartems Donuts are covered in a vanilla bean glaze, and topped with a dark chocolate ganache macaron, colourful mini meringues, and rainbow sprinkles. 100 percent of sales will go toward A Loving Spoonful (a volunteer-driven society that provides free and nutritious meals to those with HIV/AIDS living in Metro Vancouver). Limited quantities are available on August 5 at 10:30 a.m., so we suggest heading there early. Find them at the BMO Denman Branch (958 Denman Street).

      Parq Vancouver

      5. Pride Cake Slices

New and creative sweets are always welcomed, but sometimes we just want the good ‘ol classic dessert: cake. In light of the LGBT celebrations taking place in Vancouver, this otherwise normal vanilla cake has been turned into a Pride cake. Made with multiple layers of rainbow cake and frosting, each slice is a pretty sight—they’re available through August 6. Find them at multiple restaurants located inside Parq Vancouver (39 Smithe Street).

      The Pie Hole

      6. Pride Pop Tarts

If you’ve never had a pop tart growing up, then you’ve missed out. Don’t fret if you feel left out, because a local pie shop has whipped up some of these colourful treats just in time for Pride in the city. The pop tarts feature a double-butter crust filled with Okanagan cherries, and are covered in rainbow icing. They are available for pre-order online or on a first-come, first-serve basis in store from August 1 to 6. Find them at the Pie Hole (3497 Fraser Street and 7832 6th Street, Burnaby).

      7. Rainbow Pride Packs

Few things satisfy a sweet tooth more than a warm cinnamon bun. These classic treats are getting a makeover for Pride Vancouver—each bun will be glazed with colourful vanilla-bean cream-cheese icing. The “Pride Packs” come in a box of six, and 50 percent of sales will go toward Qmunity (a non-profit organization that aims to improve the lives of queer, trans, and Two-Spirit individuals) and the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation. Available August 3 to 5, pre-orders are recommended to avoid disappointment. Find them at Grounds For Coffee (2565 Alma Street).

      8. Rainbow Sprinkle Cakes

If you want more than a single slice of cake, then check out the miniature whole cakes at this catering company. Probably smaller than the size of your palm, this naked rainbow sprinkle cake features strawberry buttercream and extremely cute cookie cake toppers (think rainbows, unicorns, and shooting stars). Orders must be placed before Tuesday (July 31) and will be delivered throughout the week—only 100 of these picture perfect treats are available. Find them at the Lazy Gourmet (1605 West 5th Avenue).
